I surrounded myself in campfires. How do I get out?

I surrounded myself in campfires on all sides to guard against the boogey men, but I regret it. How do I get out? I can't just walk through it. How do I put out a campfire?

It won't let me walk through them, and the Boogeymen are still there. I can't travel or sleep. Is there any way to put these things out?

Not certain, but you could also try Alt-moving through the fires, though that may have adverse consequences.

Hold down "." it'll tell you when they leave.  Also, some bogeymen can fly.

Go to controls and set . to "immediate repeat" so you can just hold (or weigh?) it down instead of pressing it repeatedly. I read a book while waiting for my swimming skills to get high enough to escape a sewer.
