Fishing
« on: March 05, 2012, 03:31:29 pm »

In the past I've been able to rely on fisherdwarves to bring in a steady stream of turtles which supply both craft and food! along with all the other fishies. But in this latest all (3, maybe 4) worlds/embarks I've experienced so far have had zero fish. I get the 'there is nothing to catch in x swamp'. Have I just been  unlucky and managed to get several places with no fish? Or has something changed since the last version?

I like using the shells to decorate everything :3

You might've fished everything to extinction.

I know that can happen, but this is from embark. I haven't fished a single fish :(

Try embarking on a site with a river. From one fisherdwarf in three years, I now have OVER 9000 raw fish, hanging about. No barrels left, so I don't want to cook it in case it all rots.

Your Dwarfs might just be fishing in empty murky pools then :P

In that case the fish haven't spawned yet, or you'll never be getting fish :C

... I thought it rotted if you DIDN'T cook it...

so long as the cooked food is stored in a stockpile AFAIK it doesn't rot? Also rock pots are your friends :)

If the fish is processed in a fishery, I don't think it rots.
Don't know about storing in stockpiles = no rot. Will check with !!SCIENCE!!

Using Masterwork mod to make rock barrels now.

You don't need a mod to make rock barrels.  Just go to the craft shop and make large rock pots.

Food doesn't spoil if it's in a stockpile, although vermin will still eat it if it's not in barrels.  It's also very likely that murky pools run out of fish, rivers and caverns are much more reliable.

Murky ponds will frequently have no turtles in them from the start of the embark.  Fish are not guaranteed to exist in all biomes, even if you have natural water sources.

I have 3 biomes overlapping (though only two with pools in) both seem to have no fish. I guess I must have been unlucky these past few embarks! I did manage to spot some toads in the pools just now. I guess they're my resident 'fish' population. meh

Wow this is that facepalm moment, ive been using tons of trees for barrels did not know rock pots could brew and store.. thought it was decoration  :'(

OP: Ive never had much luck fishing either, it usually ends up with a dead fisherdorf or a thief will stab him once and run away when he spots them, they usually jump into my military or engravers lol

I watched a zombie dwarf tear off a girls dress and hit her with it so hard it became lodged in her skull.

Ghoulz - 15 minutes could save you 15% or more on carp insurance.

Build a Wharf in the caverns or redirect a brook to make your own underground river ^-^
