Styles of Desalinization plants?
« on: March 21, 2008, 05:46:00 am »

So, I made a temp desalinization plant on my ocean fortress, using an existing pond and having it pumped into a reservoir.

What are some other ways, preferably that directly tap the nearby ocean?

If the reservoir is smaller than the source pond, you can do it.  Though on my ocean fortress I don't get a cold winter, so the water doesn't re-fill after the spring thaw.

I put in floors and walls for the reservoir, cause someone said if the stuff from the pump touches natural walls it turns back into salt water.

Pumps in DF don't actually 'move' water; they destroy the water in the input square and create a new portion in the output square. It amounts to the same thing, except properties of the water are not carried along; so pollution, saltiness, etc. etc. vanish and you get nice sparkling fresh water.

I haven't encountered the 'natural walls' thing; all my reservoirs on ocean maps are dug out and left with the natural walls, and all of them seem to do just fine.

Would having rocksalt or siltyloam walls affect the water in a reservoir?

Pumping from the ocean doesn't work?

It would, but I wanted to see if there were any other fun or exciting ways to do it.   I've not figured out the "wave harvesting" desalinization plant.  Also the majority of my fortress is in the cliffs above the ocean, so wandering to the beach all the time takes too much time for them.

I could set up the pump to take from the ocean (or at least a channel from the ocean)  I'm eventually gonna be setting up a wharf type thing into the ocean. (Or in the beach if I decide to do the dry dock then fill thing.)
