vampires are always happy. If the whole fort goes insane because of a lack of clothes, your vampire will be organizing nudist parties with a happy smile.

Nope.  I've got a melancholic vampire sitting naked in his jail cell, walled off from the world and clutching a steel crossbow and quiver in pus-covered hands (hammerer broke two fingers and the fort has crappy medical staff).  He's not hungry or thirsty, he's just permanently miserable.

I'll be more impressed if you can tell me what made him go melancholic. Did he lose a pet? His wife died? Or did he fail a mood?

Jam a door with its corpse and let all the goblins in. Hey, nobody said it had to be a weapon against your enemies.

Being Meloncholy and Immortal must be terrible...

This pretty much sums up Goblin and Elf culture in a nutshell. Berserk and Melancholy all in one manic box.

I had two vampires locked up in a box outside set to spar forever.  They did fine for a while, mostly being Content due to the occasional sparring happy thought cancelling out the occasional caught-in-the-rain unhappy thought or being angry at long patrol duty.  However, eventually their clothes rotted off and the unhappiness from that drove one berserk and he punched the other's skull in.

Wall it off in your fortress to "soul jar" your fort in case everyone else dies for some reason.

Nudity and general fortress depression, I think.  Well that coupled with being charged with multiple murders.

Already did.  I did say I walled him off in his jail cell.

Had a vamp walled off while procrastinating the decision of what to do with him.  His mood was always content even though he had some unhappy thoughts about wearing worn clothing.  Suddenly went SRM when his clothes finally rotted off.

Hmm putting him out of his misery seems too good for him. I say flood his room so you can have a Soggy, Nude, Stark raving mad vampire.  :D

but doesn't him being Insane ruin his usefulness as a Soul jar? I though that them going crazy caused them not to be counted as part of your civilization?

I imagine a naked vampire flailing his arms and running around a fort for the rest of eternity yelling "WUBWUBWUBWUBWUBWUBWUB"

I thought it'd be the pedophile vampire doing the creep, you'd just be sitting their making a rock throne and all of a sudden you feel breathing on the back of your neck, so you turn around, and he's just CREEPIN.

If they're stark raving mad, no. They only leave the civ if they go berzerk.

I had an above ground garden built in the grounds of my castle and two young dwarves spent time socialising there over the summer and at the end of the summer they were in love. Remember those long summers of your childhood? That first kiss in the gardens while crossbows dwarves shoot goblins above your head? The rain of dead birds as the hunters get to work? Truly Spearhills is a paradise.

So if you gave a vampire a farm patch, a few pigtail seeds, a farmer's workshop, a loom and a clothier's shop (or alternatively you could get some spiders) you could theoretically keep them going forever?  I guess they'd move agonisingly slowly due to lack of alcohol, but they should move faster than clothes rot.

They don't drink, so they are not alcohol dependant.

Dwarven Vampires may be blood sucking monstrosities, but they're still dwarves. Their biological systems require a constant supply of alcohol.
