Goblin/Kobolds keep getting into fort
« on: March 04, 2012, 02:02:04 am »

I have a 4x16 field of weapons traps on the bridge to my fort. But I keep finding goblins in my alcohol stockpile (its the next area) , is it possible for them to evade EVERY trap? or are that not working well?

Don't quote me on this but i believe that ambushers have to be detected before they will trip the traps.

also kobolds have Trap Avoid, so they will never set any of your traps off.

Would be cool if one could order amputations to fight infections.

Goblin snatchers will be caught normally by cage traps, even if not revealed. IIRC weapon traps will also work on them. Have you left any other openings (diagonal entries, channeled tiles, etc) unblocked?

Nope ... When I seal up the fort with bridges and doors . I cant build outside , lack of materials . Is it possible that they come via the caverns? I have a door there.

Dogs. On. Chains.

If a dwarf doesn't bump into one of those stealthed little bastards, and a trap doesn't get them, than my dogs usually alert me to them.
Make sure to have a way to lock them inside if or when you catch them inside so you can kill them.

(cage traps are my favorite. Capturing them, putting them in a room behind some fortifications, and letting my marksdwarfs have some good ol' live fire excercises.)

The best choice of restraint is therefore a good strong metal chain. A high-quality chain will also let the prisoner admire it, giving him a boost to his happiness.

TRAP AVOID is the keyword here. There is no such thing as DOG AVOID, lol.
Gork the kobold thief is sneaking down a hallway. Laughs at your cage, weapon traps. Then finds a dog/animal chained along the pathway, that raises a ruckus. In terror it runs away, forgetting to check for traps. Whammo, caged/weapon trap pureed kobold.
Girlinhat created a good technique using a animal sentry post to foil thieves, and detect ambushes using this technique. I think the range is 4 . Goblin ambushers have same range, but no trap avoid

Should you fail to comply, strict !!disciplinary actions!! will be taken. Also, we feel we should remind you that one of the "criminals" on your list is the chief medical dwarf. If he ends up too badly injured to do his job, you will be fired. Out of a magma cannon.
Sincerely,
The Administration

I always put a pasture at the front of my fort and put all my non-butcherable animals there.

Always fun when the thieves meet my Giant Whatevers; gifts from the elves.

They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Dogs. On. Chains.

Dogs on 1x1 pastures are nicer, lets the dogs chase down escaping thieves, flee from sieges and doesn't use up a rope

Chickens. On floorgrates.

A line of floor grates 1 level above your main entrance with animals standing on them works for me. They can see goblins but so far goblin crossbowmen ignore them completely and refuse to fire up through the grates.

I have a line of ground-level dogs too but they're on the other side of a few traps and only there to slow down things that try to rush through before the magma jacuzzi can be activated.
