What do you do with all these children?

It's no secret that due to historic migrants having massive family, we're getting huge families migrating, I've gotten 5 or more kids in one family.

So what have you been doing with them?

Mine I've been burrowing until they're of a decent age, getting them to make artifacts, or using some new modded in alcohols to turn them into GCS and Dragons.

I've been letting them grow up into cannon fodder.  That is, when ten of them reach adulthood, I recruit them into the military.  Mind you, this is not a very great hazard in my fortresses because I believe in using traps to stop enemies before they reach the troops.  But the idea is there.  If they have become legendary in something during their childhood, then they get to pursue that career.  Too bad so many of them go into stonecrafting.  Why can't some child become a legendary weaponsmith?   :P

If there's a suitable syndrome applier, super Dwarf initiative, otherwise pull a Sparta and expose them to the wrath of mount Taeygetus.

Turn the cheat thingy in Dwarf Therapist on. Or, if you don't want to cheat, just lock them in a cell in which you can throw food and water from time to time. Maybe a stray vampire or two as well... and werewolves never really hurt either.

Set the baby:child flag on d_init accordingly. It works, I have only 8 children in my 88 dwarves fortress. Some of them matured into Peasants on the third year.

With so long time to socialize as children, I wouldn't recommend drafting. Tantrum spirals are bound to happen.

In my case, if the invaders get past the minefields and over the final drawbridge, then the fortress is doomed anyway.
