Worn horse meat

This is a stack of 5 horse meat. This object is showing some wear.

What gives? Is this a sign that the meat is about to rot?

As far as I'm aware, properly stored (ie: in food stockpile, preferably inside barrel) food will not rot, although it will wear. Badly worn food can still be cooked with no problems, although it has no value and I'm not sure if dwarves will eat it raw.

Isn't it so that wear occurs if food is stored outside barrels and dorfs walk over it repeatedly?

It'll still wear inside barrels, just much more slowly.

I'm pretty sure it's the rats and flies and lizards nibbling on it that does that. Toady posted a formula with the chances they will nibble your food a while back, I don't remember the numbers exactly but basically no barrel means a high chance of it getting nibbled, wooden barrels help somewhat and metal barrels make it very hard for them to nibble your food.

So get some cats and/or metal barrels.
