It chased another with a team of legendary axe-men, they all died to a normal sponge.

I have no idea what sponge men's bodies look like, but if they're sponge men then doesn't that mean they have a lot of squishy limbs and a head to cut off and kill them? Unlike giant sponges, which have no body parts.

Giant sponges would die very easily if they had a head to cut off or torso to bisect.

Because once you start adding in bones and brains, then it's no longer a spongeman, it's a man with...  sponge skin, or something.

You may be confusing the type of sponge some use to clean dishes with that of a sea sponge, which do have internal organs and a rudimentary nervous system.
