I think there are many reasons. But when you have the nominal leader on the other side of the globe, you are calling for trouble.

I personally quit due to the addition of the rare items, I dislike that feature even more than the other features of Wurm that I dislike. It was, as the saying goes, the straw that broke the camel's back.

I'm still glad I got back into the game, even if it was short lived, since it led me to sell my old account for a sizeable wad of cash, thanks to the ownership of a bunch of items that aren't available anymore.

That and they are in fact quite rare unless you dig all d8ay long in case you get a few rare/supreme dirt, but really? Nobody will be uber with *rare* dirt.

Minecraft UI is very simple. There's only so many ways you can implement "simple" without copying something. We also gonna complain that it uses WASD?

They're also terrible.  A butchering knife reduces the timer from 7.0 to 6.9 with rarity.  This is so abysmally laughable that it is entirely not worth the effort.

A rare bow, debatable because of the accuracy.  A rare anything else?  Lol.

There are benefits to some rares that are worth it.  Toolbelts get an extra slot, towers get an extra guard.  A lot of tools get a significant damage reduction.  Forges heat faster, some items are a bit smaller.

Honestly though, it's mostly flavor.  None of it is a huge game changer.

(Don't attempt to answer that.  Down that path lies ... well I was going to say madness but you all run towards madness as if it was made from chocolate and puppies.  Just forget I said anything.)

I just thought the change detracted from the game. It gives yet another reason to grind and yet another advantage to people who play 24/7. From what I've heard the benefit on weapons and armor is actually pretty good, enough so that a group using rare or better enchanted stuff can wipe the floor with an equally skilled group using regular enchanted stuff. So all the high end pvpers will be running around in it, and it's just yet another grind to do before you can play on their level. Granted, pvp isn't all that wonderful in Wurm anyway - but I still wanted to try it eventually since we were on the Epic pvp servers.

It's obvious WHY they did it - they want people to be more attached to their gear so they'll pay real money to buy those stones that have a chance at letting you keep your stuff if you die. If all your gear is just high quality with enchantments that's fairly hard to replace, but not that bad if you have access to a good enchanter and skilled crafters. If all your gear is "rare" or "supreme" or "fantastic" then it's extremely hard to replace, so people will be more willing to shell out 5 euros to have a chance at securing it and keeping their enemies from having it.

I already disliked some things about the game, and rare items and the implications of them just put my annoyance meter way over the top. Plus if they're adding harder to get items like rares, what's next?

HOTS is getting hit by griefers, jerks from a place called DeadIsland is going around killing newbies that aren't kissing their arses, and the so called Griefers are just butthurt against the newbie-killers, and i'm helping them because they killed a friend of mine. One of the griefers have helped me a bit, with trying to get revenge at this one dude, and got a nice sack of wemp.

But no seriously, guys don't roll HOTS, it's painful. The mobs are scary, the BG noise is also scary, and most of all... We seem to not have good players.

The griefers are called BWC (Black Wolf Cove)

I unlocked the gates of bay12 before it disbanded in case anyone wants to take a look. It's slowly starting to decay and fall apart, although Evilcherry's vineyard is still being used and maintained. (:
