Alrighty folks, time to decide the size of our deed.

The minimum size we can have is S5, which is 5 tiles in all directions from the token. Including the token, this makes the entire size from corner to corner 11x11.

Using this Deed Calculator, a deed that size with no guards and default perimeter (Which is free for 5 tiles) would cost 10s for the settlement form, 2s 42c to place and with 1s per month of upkeep. Each guard we have adds 2s to purchase and then an additional 1s per month for upkeep.

Remember that the larger our deed is, the more it will cost to place. The monthly upkeep is the minimum of 1s until a 23x23 deed, which is when the cost begins going up. This is not counting guard or perimeter expansion, either.

Personally, I think that a 21x21 with no guards and default perimeter is plenty for us. The cost to plant is 8s 82c with 1s upkeep, so including the settlement form we'd need 19s 82c.

Let me know what you all think. After 24 hours, we'll put all the choices in a poll. The largest majority vote of that poll will be the size of our deed.

Would prefer a guard, but perhaps we can always add one if needed (and that is only to protect AFKers from attacks).

As for the size, I think of the same as the 1st wall at the moment. We can always change that once we build the outer walls. Planning for 3 months later could be a bit too much for us.

Just pro tip.
Start small. you allways can expand later on and move perimeters.
If try to build defences on that large area it takes time.
And last. people tend to leave wurm after few months.

Let me know what you all think. After 24 hours, we'll put all the choices in a poll. The largest majority vote of that poll will be the size of our deed.

I think the 10s from the deed goes into creating the settlement. Having 1 guard would be nice too, although I just noticed that 1 guard significantly ups the upkeep. It shows here that its 3s initial and 3s a month to hire a guard on the epic server (compared to 2s and 1s for non-epic). Not having a guard would mean we're capable of being drained without any fighting at all though, since you have to kill deed guards to drain.

A 21x21 with 1 guard would be 11s82c founding and 3s 88c upkeep. Which means we'd need the deed and 1s82c to plant it, then we'd need money to put in the upkeep fund.

We could start smaller. A 15x15 with 1 guard would be 7s50c to build, leaving 2s50c in upkeep. Upkeep for it would be 3s 45c. So for that the deed + 1s for upkeep would have us good for a month. We'd probably want to try and keep upkeep > 1 month to prevent decay though, so as time passes we could dump in more.

Thought I'd post some screenshots of the new area that we've settled in.

So, as you can see, it's pretty well flattened. Conall did most of that. :D

The plan is to dig it down enough to have about 20x20 or larger, if possible. Once we've dug it down, we'll plant the deed and get to work on construction.

If you create a deed before fortifying it, you best plant the smallest possible deed with enough perimeter to allow you to expand to where you want to be eventually - that way WHEN you are raided and your deed is drained, it won't be a significant financial hit to whoever funds the deed.

Looking forward to getting that up.

I'm contemplating joining you guys, but I have a question from those that have been playing:

How hot is my laptop going to get when playing this?

Generally I refuse to play anything that consistently runs me at 75C or above. 80+ is flat out a no-go; I like to keep my computer from cooking itself. Unfortunately I can't find component spec ratings, but I'm assuming they are 85C parts (rather than 105C) so when I see 80 I get fairly nervous.

Given that this is a Java game, I'm concerned.  For reference, I don't play Minecraft because the one time I tried, it pegged my machine up to about 85C.

Specs: MacBookPro3,1; Core2Duo 2.4GHz; GeForce 8600M GT.

With those specs, if your laptop is properly ventilated and clean, and you play with mid-to-low level graphics settings (the terrain at highest resolutions is actually nice, mostly) you should be able to handle a client with viewing distances at middle ranges.

You can try it out for free though, log in, walk around, and watch your component temperatures.  Since you have expressed concerns for them, I suspect you have ways of monitoring those temperatures without having to enter BIOS

Your laptop sounds like it could use some dust bunny removal and new cooling paste smeared on.

Computers shouldn't really run higher than 60c normally, past 80c your past the red and straight into the danger zone. You'll be seriously effecting the life span of your components if you run past 75c for extended periods.

But yes, a good blast with can of compressed air is what you need.
When I started playing wurm with these guys my cpu was going into the mid 80s, did some overdue maint the next day and found a thick layer of pet hair under my cpu fan. Fished it out with a paper clip and a few blast with the air can and now my comp doesn't go above 55c

A word of caution. Disassembling a laptop often voids the warranty and nearly always involves about fifteen screws and a lot of buggering about. Anything I have to take a laptop apart for is charged at my regular hourly rate, even for friends and family.
