You named your artifact WHAT?
« on: March 02, 2012, 09:15:02 am »

I use nicknames as a code to quickly identify what a dwarf's role is in my fort. Two of the largest categories being "D" for Drone and "WR" for Warrior Recruit. Well, one of those Drones went and got a mood:

Spoiler: "The Name" (click to show/hide)

His nickname has since changed since it was a fey mood and he's now a legendary. But this artifact won't change its name...

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

Yes. He named it after himself... using the name he had on mood inception.

Common occurrence, seems especially moreso in the new version, with necromancers naming their own books after themselves.

Well yes, naming an object after yourself is hardly surprising. What stuck with me is that he'd use his nickname (meaning "I am an expendable mook") instead of his original name on the artifact.

Not that surprising when you think about it - the game just copied the dwarf's current name into the artifact definition rather than specify it as some sort of reference.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

This can be *utilized* a bit.

Yes it makes sense that the artifact's name won't change as it's a copy/paste instead of a reference. I hadn't expected the nickname to be used in the Paste though. The artifact's name gets decided at mood inception so... there was nothing I could do short of scrapping my nickname system (or savescumming) to prevent this artifact getting an... awkward name.

I wonder if the artifact name will change if you change the nickname display settings.

Not sure if I want to know which implication you were going with.

Huh, I had thought that dwarves "naming artifacts after themselves" was coincidentally naming an artifact the same thing as their own name.

It does change the artifact's displayed name, yes. But there is no nickname setting that says "never show nicknames".
