Cool, you rehashed the last few pages. I'll still enjoy the game when I get it. Hope you have fun with CitiesXL, I never liked it much.

CitiesXL feels like an independent Sim city 5 to me. It didn't have the SC name to live up to, which meant that the reduced depth and complexity didn't affect it as much as SC5.

If only it wasn't optimised just enough to run off a block of wood and (if you're lucky) a leaf or two.

It's really a disappointment that there's no full game reviews this close to launch. I recently was reminded that Sim City 5 is coming out soon, when I was googling Sim City 4 advice (seriously, why won't they use my subway?) and I have to admit, it looks pretty cool. People in this thread have already mentioned most of the thoughts I've had about it, although I certainly wonder how much the addition of non-beta stuff will change the game. For example, we know that there is non-level terrain in the game, but since you couldn't play on it in the beta we don't know how prevalent it will be, or if you can modify it yourself. Are we even certain that the beta area size is the only size available? We also don't know how much EA's traditional 'streamlining' of complex games will rear its ugly head until we see more of what can be built later in the game. Was the beta hour most of the fun gameplay to be had, or can city actually remain interesting for a long time?

If some of these questions could be answered, I'd consider preordering, but with these looming specters I'm afraid I'll have to miss out on the preorder bonus for sure.

I watched most of the stream and it looked pretty good. Too bad about the whole origin thing, one of the only things I can see that would keep me from getting it.. but otherwise... yeah...

TB isn't a typical journalist. I'm not the biggest fan of him myself, but even I'll admit most of the time he's free from the same sort of strong arming most traditional journalists are susceptible to and thus he's pretty trustworthy as far as his opinions are concerned.

That sounds extremely relevant to my interests. I can't find a link to a recording of the stream though, does anybody know where it is?

Edit: The only information I have so far about a full release version of the game, is that reddit was mean to TB because he doesn't know how to play Sim City.

There's no godmode terrain creation, but you can change terrain in city modus. Going to cost heaps of money.

Yes, considering announcing large size is unanoumisly regarded as a good thing, I have no idea why EA would keep quiet about it.

Last thing I heard, from the demo is that they increased building cost, but lowered maintenance. Ie, it's very easy to make a city that runs a profit, but you have to wait a longish time before you can build something. Ie, they made it easier but more grindish. Combining that with the unlocks system and an in game store, they really seem to be going for the -ville game bussiness model.

regarding the citysize... maybe they limited it because it seems now everything is animated "right, with a goal" and not "randomly" like the previous sim citys... i.e. cars.
so it probably used the resources the previous games needed to display size as in the sheer amount of objects and random animations, now to display a accurate simulation as in it saves more where a car is and where it needs to go etc?

still a system where you could pick a starting area for your town and then later buy more area next to your town (basically the unused map space between the city plots divided into little pieces you can buy once your town is a bit bigger) could have been something to add... (the "rollercoaster tycoon" series comes to my mind that did such a system where you could buy more land later)

Yeah, he mentioned everything you guys were talking about, bushiness model, Origin, small towns, etc. I would buy this game if I didn't have have a terrible computer. I don't really mind DRM as long as I can play on multiple computers, online or offline. And it looks fun, TBH. Not the "great sim city's of the past" but a decent sequel ignoring the DRM. Plus, the idea is you build multiple towns to specialize, not just one gigatroplois with everything, just like in real life!

Specializing is fine...forcing it by limiting city size is lazy. It should be forced via resources and bonuses/penalties to having a specific industry or conflicting industries in your town...IE a casino town that has tons of casinos and support buildings like clubs and whatever should get a synergy bonus of sorts...

Having a coal industry in said town should conflict and make tourism drop a lot...

to say "just like in real life!" is silly to say the least when a HUGE number of cities are over 2k x 2k
