I think everyone who plays video games has a couple of these in their head.
The one I keep going back to is a survival / strategy / rpg / somethingorother game in which you play the crew of a crashed colony ship tasked with setting up a self-sustaining colony on a planet only accessible via a wormhole. I haven't worked out all the details but basically the ship crashes because of some sort of wormhole-related accident, and a rescue party won't be able to reach you for a number of years. This was known about beforehand (the "no rescue for X years" part not the crash), so the ship was stocked with enough supplies to last them the entire time, except now the ship has gone boom and what supplies remain are scattered across the surface of the planet, along with the crew who bailed using their escape pods.
So your mission starts as one of survival; gather your crew, construct some sort of habitat either from the wreckage of the ship, from the local flora, or most likely a ramshackle combination of the two. Once you form a stable society with enough food and shelter to last, you begin to attract the attention of the local fauna, and alien tribes. Each tribe is of the same species, but with different customs and behaviors. These could be randomised each time you play. Maybe the red tribe greets you by jumping up and down and hooting (which turns out to be a friendly gesture), but the next time they start throwing rocks at you (probably not friendly). I hope you kept the xenolinguist alive, because you're going to have issues communicating with them otherwise (and even then).
You can use salvaged weapons and equipment for a while, but eventually they're going to run out of power cells or break down. To survive, you'll need to go native. You'll need to learn which plants are edible and which aren't ("Damn, the botanist is dead... hey John, taste these purple ones for me!") and learn how to farm the ones that are. You'll need to learn to deal with the local wildlife ("Sir, it appears we have made camp on the mating grounds of the local megafauna." "What?" "The big ones are going to murder us if we stay here sir."), learn to use renewable sources of energy ("No more laser cells available sir, but I've sharpened these sticks..."), treat any injuries that crop up with limited resources... you'll start off looking like star trek, and end up looking like mad-max.
You know what? It would make a great dwarf fortress mod now that I put it all down on paper
