World Viewer 2012 - Input requested
« on: February 29, 2012, 05:20:10 pm »

Hi all,

I created World Viewer.  But due to the existance of a superior tool in Legends Viewer (from Parker147) and a lack of initiative and time I decided to stop updating it.

One year later and an employment-based need to become more familiar with VB.Net and World Viewer is on it's way back.

I'm hoping to receive some input and some offers to help test various versions from the community and I thought this would be a good place to ask for some help.

First, what I'm hoping to get out of this topic:

  • Offers to test out BUGGY early versions of World Viewer, before it is publicly released.
  • Useful criticisms/concerns surrounding previous World Viewer versions that I would want to avoid while still early in development
  • Requests for interesting data that might be able to be extracted or processed from all of the exported legends data (history/site/xml/map)
  • Comments and Requests around interface.  In other words, how do you want to view the data World Viewer compiles?
  • Last but definitely not least, an idea if you would actually use or be interested in a tool like this.

Finally, a rudimentary progress report and general plan of action:

  • Read in all data from legends export and store it in an useful manner - Done
  • Compile new pieces of unique/distinct/interesting data (wars/dynasties/family tree) from the general data (event collections/history file leaders/historical figures) - In Progress
  • Develop a powerful yet easy to navigate interface - Early stages
  • Initial Public Release (new topic)
  • Develop interesting mapping capability - Not started

Just want to say I appreciate how cool Parker was when I talked to him about me putting World Viewer out there again, and in the spirit of cooperation to make interesting DF tools I'll be providing the source as soon as I have an acceptable release to share with everyone.

Please let me know what you think!

If there's a linux distribution, I can help test.

As for what I think would be useful/interesting? Maybe a quick-view of all the tomes/slabs/books in the world that teach secrets, and a means by which to pinpoint their tower's location on a map? I've never tried Legends Viewer, but I do know the historic site map in regular legends mode leaves a few sites out for some reason.

I don't think that sort of information is available in legends exports (which World Viewer relies on).  It's possible though I haven't genned a world properly.  If you have an example world you'd want to share with me I could take a look at it and see if there's something I'm missing.

Regarding a linux version, I don't think it's likely, I don't have much real experience with nix.  I will release the source though with every release if someone wants to handle that.
