Laughing Llama Game Jam: gauging interest
« on: February 29, 2012, 01:03:58 am »

Hey, forum!

I don't know if any of you folks watched the Mojam,
but it was a 50-hour period during which Mojang (the folks that made Minecraft)
made a game, streamed the whole development process, and sold the resulting game.

My hypothetical not-yet-existent independent game studio (currently just a couple people)
tried out rapid development this weekend, and so far we've managed to put together this:

Dwimmer (30 hours)

If we were to do an official Laughing Llama weekend game jam sometime, and stream it,
would any of you watch the process? If we were to accept donations to go towards
kick-starting the company, would anybody donate for a copy of the resulting game?

I'm not making any promises, I'm just curious to see you guys' reactions to the idea.

You must remember that mojang started as a one guy with minecraft, slowly getting some more people and finishing with a company from the game's income.

IMO crowdfunding works not only by what is being done, but also who is doing it such as double fine's game with was a huge success thanks to good PR and solid foundations. There are so many attempts which die midway, that people need to know that it will be finished.

Before going through all this you must have as much buzz as possible.
Let everyone know, and that includes the astronauts and their kittens!

As for the demo, it seems really polished, those are truly sweet particles, and sweet, coins.

Remember, respect is everything.

Geez I wish I could put something like that together in 30 hours.  Very impressive!

I probably wouldn't donate.  I'm a big fan of paying for the final product instead of a potential final product.   :P

Dwimmer looks really cool, I like the art and the particle effects and the special effects and the magic and the dwarf and the ground.
What language / libraries did you use?

It's written in Java, using awt.Image stuff.
And Java Full-Screen Exclusive Mode.
A lot of the frameworks we wrote ourselves.

The birds are just directional missiles, pretty much.
They target a point that rotates their caster,
unless there is a valid enemy target nearby.
And they have a nice slow turn radius to make
them swoop around and stuff.
