Abandoned Babies?
« on: February 28, 2012, 10:29:18 pm »

That mood is definitely not getting fulfilled.  Upon birth the baby began to wander around aimlessly.  The mother is standing at the same point of the mood-taking.

I think... I like this child.  What can be done to save him?

Until that baby is old enough to understand you, you've got to treat him as livestock. I wish Toady would put in a "pen/pasture infant" command, most mothers do that anyway.

Isn't it the mother who got possessed? No danger of the baby's mood failing if it doesn't have a mood

The mother had the mood.  Is an infant immune to the needs of food/drink until becoming a child?

I am pretty sure that dwarven infants can starve. I think that kid might be screwed unless his/her mother makes an artifact really soon!

If babies are separated from their mothers (say, for example, the mother gets put in jail, goes for a swim, gets injured and gets carried off to the hospital), the baby will crawl around aimlessly. It will be fed and watered

This is from the wiki.

Just keep it safe with walls and crap and let the dwarfs being it food/water.

This baby must be saved!

Abandonment of babies also happens during injuries.

Mother and stone-smoother was engraving slab at craft workshop. Dorf was mooded in a mason workshop right next to it. Dwarf got pissed: "Y U NO BRING ME PIG TAIL FIBER" and berserked. He mauled the mother and baby, but my hammerdwarf squad was on the scene within 7 seconds and quickly subdued the unrest. The mother was taken to the hospital with some broken bones, but got splinted up fine. The baby also got attacked, and had pretty much everything in his lower body smashed and broken. He then proceeded to crawl the fortress, constantly in pain. The mother then was fixed up and returned to work. She never picked up her babby.

3 years later, the baby is still crawling the fortress, covered in dried blood. Her legs have healed, but the spine hasn't.

It should only be a baby for a year, then become a "child".

Either way, I need some buckets.  Baby buckets.  Shame we don't have a "protect" command so that my militia commander could guard the baby from snatchers and badgers.

This baby must be forced to survive to adulthood, so she is driven to become the best dwarf ever to compensate for her disability.

The mother has gone berserk and slain.  The baby is wandering outside the walls.  I'm preparing a dining hall that I hope the child will loiter in.

And it appears the child has been taken by a kidnapper...

Bad news, the child is lost and the dining room didn't help.

Good news, we have confirmed goblins on this embark.

DF players in a nutshell.
Dismissing kidnapped children as a minor issue, while having enemies is concidered a good thing.  :P

By and large, children are greater enemies than goblins, anyhow.
