Dwarf Fortress is quite possibly one of the best games in the world but as of yet I can't play any of the new releases. I've managed to generate worlds fine using the advanced island template and that's fine. Unfortunately as soon as I go wandering about the world in Adventure Mode, Windows decides Dwarf Fortress isn't working and turns it off...

I've trawled through these forums for an answer and tried dozens of things to get Windows to like Dwarf Fortress but to no avail. I really like this game and can't thank the developers enough for the hard work they put into it, but I'm starting to run out of ideas on how to get it to work. Is there something I'm missing here? I've got an 8GB laptop so I don't think its the machine at least.

Apologies that the first post I make on this forum is to ask for help. It's a superb game. I just want to play it more.

Have you tried running the game within a virtual machine using a different OS?

or booting into linux using a livecd?

any more info than 'just crashes'? do you have a dual core, or quad core computer? do you have alot of ram eating background applications? did you try re-downloading? have you modded your game at all? us the crash universal, or only in a few spotty situations that happen often?

Did you try to change your graphic drivers? Try to update if you  have older drivers or to revert to an old one if you have the newest.

I had this problem too and could fix it with creating a new world.

It could be the Adventure Mode crash bug from v0.34.01. The game crashed whenever you talked to a NPC, but only in your first genned world.

As Couchmonster said, just create a new world and you should be fine. Or update DF.

Also, if you haven't for whatever reason, change the priority in the init files from NORMAL to REALTIME.

changing processor priotity to realtime prevents some crashes, but causes others, results may vary.

True, but if he's crashing with/because of whatever it is currently set to, changing it (or changing it back, for that matter) can't really make it worse.

I haven't seen any further responses from him... so I think he might be already permanently gone.  I have setup a small tomb for him underground.
