First Encounter with Deadly Dust.. Thats not so ba-- (HURRRK!!!)
« on: February 28, 2012, 08:07:04 pm »

UPDATE at bottom

Ok, had a MegaBeast with Deadly Dust for the first time...
Everyone went on and on about how"Deadly Dust" was THEE most fearful deadly thing in all of Dwarfdom..

Deciding to meet the foe head on, I sent out two groups of archers and my best Axe Dwarfs, figuring I could kill it quick and from afar..
The battle indeed WAS short, I few blasts and it was dead, it unleashed only ONE burst of dust, which seemed to only wound most of the squard.
I looked at injuries, a few bruises, two Dwarfs had broken limbs, but other then that unharmed.

That was it? The infamous Deadly Dust? A few bruises and broken limbs? HA!!!

Smug and Satisfied with my triumph over Death, I sent everyone back to work in the fort.
Some time latter however I received the following.

"Guard Dwarf cancels fill water skin, too injured"
What was this?

I went to check and upon looking EVERY SINGLE BODY PART Was yellow.
Every toe, every finger, everyone bone and body organ was yellow or blue.
Less then 3 minutes of real time after that, I got the following...

""Gaurd Dwarf A has suffocated
""Gaurd Dwarf B has suffocated
""Gaurd Dwarf C has suffocated
""Gaurd Dwarf D has suffocated
""Gaurd Dwarf E has suffocated
""Gaurd Dwarf F has suffocated
""Gaurd Dwarf G has suffocated

So... yeah...
Deadly Dust SUCKS

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

UPDATE!!!

Well My Saga of the Deadly Dust continues..

In a mad attempt to save the lives of the wounded, I hyper modded the healing of Dwarves, hoping they would regenerate before dropping dead.
They did heal... But still dropped dead due to suffocation and beign covered in what is effectivly Freezing liquid ((Think being doused in liquid CO2))

So... I then removed "BREATHING" from the init files.

This DID allow them to live, and they DID regenerate... Except for apparent nerve damage.  After about 10min playing, all wounds were back to white except for 'Brain' and 'Upper and Lower Spine'
But HEY they were ALIVE right? Who cares if they can't move and are Still covered inf freezing liquids of Doom? I'll work out a way to fix that LATER
Am I rite?

So...  I Q'ed up a hell of a lot of stuff from having the game so long, set the fort to work, and then went off to dinner with some friends...

45min later I come back to find EVERY LAST DWARF is infected now!  Also the Whole fort is filled with clouds of miasma.  Why?
Because EVERY LAST Dog, cat, elephant and pet dropped dead about 20min previous.  EVERY LIVING THING other then Dwarves are now dead, and the Dwarves themsleves have been reduced to braindamaged unworking, undieing things crying out to finally be realeased from the un-ending pain.

DEADLY DUST people!
It's 'FUN'

Be glad its just an "acidic" dust and not one of the plauge-ish ones I got on a modded world which turned people into piles of contagious miasma.

I believe there's an exploit involving bridges over moving water becoming dorfwashes or something like that, check
the wiki on FB/titan tactics.

Image of the deaths in question.
In truth they all died within SECONDS of each, a grim grim day

Dust is small change against what trackable liquid extracts used to be, or what husks are now.  :P

The best way is to build a series of remotely lockable rooms with some useless furniture in them. Lure the FB in by locking the rest of your base, lock the door behind it when it goes into the museum of useless furniture to knock stuff over, then give it a decontamination shower with magma and crossbow bolts.

It could have been worse. A steel fire-breathing shrimp or a fly with necrotizing blood could have taken down your entire fortress. An isolation chamber for holding, studying and killing extremely dangerous organisms is a must for any long-term fort.

The worst part about this is that I can't go back, thinking i was safe, i had saved it quite a bit after the attack.
when i load i have about 28 seconds before they all die.

Geh, this is in a map that is SOOO close to finishing a really intense mega project.
Normally I would not stoop to this... But...
If someone with DF-Hack wishes, I deeply implore someone for the chance to save or "cure" them

Maybe HEALING_RATE:1 on all dwarven tissues plus a slew of 'no body function' tags? Syndromes do display on a dwarf's status screen, so as long as the syndrome's not permanent you can return to normal after the timer's up.

First fort I had played in a long long time, first deadly beast I get is the deadly mister, it also had a bunch of legs or something. No biggie I say to myself, my army of randomly barely trained dwarfs will handle it. We manage to hit one of its legs while the entire army was destroyed almost immediately.

Personal note, if a forgotten beast with deadly mist comes, SHUT, DOWN, EVERYTHING.

I think it's a draw between deadly blood and deadly dust for fatality. It really depends on the syndrome.

Once I had a deadly blood FB get into my fort and main stockpile, so I couldn't see the blood on the ground. Later... "Hey what's this trail of blood OH NO URIST WHY ARE YOUR FINGERS MELTING"

I set up a GCS silk farm as a FB trap room once-- nabbed myself a "deadly secretions" FB who's secretions boiled at room temperature, so he was just surrounded by this puff of deadly, paralyzing (hence suffocating) gas.  I unlocked the room to retrieve him for my zoo, and looked away, when I started getting a string of "Urist has suffocated."  Couldn't figure it out at first.  Turns out the secretions were boiling right out of the cage, killing every hauler that tried to pick it up.

That one never made it to the zoo.  Just built a couple of walls around the cage where it lay, and dug a new passage.
