No if i remember correctly pits are just a house to any number of fun creatures.

Like dragons or spiders or daemons or colossus's or anything just generally bad.

Nah, deep pits just connect different cavern layers. They don't house anything special. Flying critters from lower levels can fly up them, but that's not particularly problematic.
