Showing stone types at embark
« on: February 28, 2012, 01:30:55 pm »

I remember, a few year ago, the embark screen would actually show the stone types at embark: diorite, limonite, chalk, etc. Now all we have is "some sallow metals", "deep metals, "clay" and I don't see how this is better than before. Is Toady planning to fix that in a distant future?

Don't forget the sand. That's also an important resource and it's just count toward soil.

Yep, that too. Is there any reason to hide stone types at embark anyway?

To suprise you.

I for one, didn't expect flux, and found dolomite near the surface in my new fort. Didn't know it was  there, increasing the "Fuck yeah!" potential exponentially.

More than types of stone I'd rather see categories. Didn't the game do that once? Where it showed igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. That and the information about sand specifically would be enough for me.

Somehow, that fills me more with dread than anticipation.  It's like being told that someone's exhuming your favorite grandparent and they're going to try to make her into a cyborg stripper.

It should at least show you the topmost layer of stone, since once you embark the pebbles and boulders will give away what it is (except on glaciers).  Plus the types of soil on the surface.
