Yep.  You have a group of batmen living in the caverns under your fortress.  It happens.  If you dig down and breach the caverns, they will probably fly up and attack your dwarves.

Looks like you found the batcave.
Yes animal people form little villages in the caves, its best to initally avoid them unless you can deal with poison darts.

I don't know if this has been fixed (but since it has "feature" all over it, I doubt it), but in the past these tribes had a peculiar trait:
1. They would fight forgotten beasts that came to the cavern
2. The survivor who scored a successful kill, destroying a forgotten beast, would no longer be marked hostile--he/she would now be a friendly local cavern monster, facing other F.B. and making nice to your dwarves.

Finally these people are the game's only source of blowgun darts, if arming your marksmen with exotic nonrenewable ammo is your thing.

Animal men just sorta sit around and do nothing unless threatened.  Just ignore them or go up and slaughter them so you can take their wooden items and food.

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.

The civilization will not, but individual batmen that kill dwarves will get names and be recorded in history.

Named outcast groups from unnamed civilizations, or from existing named ones?

This seems like a good excuse to create a large city, let an elite goblin flyer kill a bunch of your guys to pump him up a bit, and then have an epic fight. Bonus points if you can get some kind of Octopus person, perferably a doctor of some sort, to be involved as well. And if you have a vampire with good comedian skills, a joker if you will, you're set.

It's simple.  We KILL the batmen.

ive gotten in the habit of replacing my chief medical dwarf as soon as he gains any notable skill in diagnosis.
It's really funny watching them do unnecessary surgery because of a wrong diagnosis.
the conditions were bad enough to turn a dwarf who didn't care about anything mad, that's pretty hardcore.
