I've a small dwarf army - 3 of them, total.  All have the same equipment set - requires exact match.  On the feet are socks (any meterial) and metal high boots.

I've crafted __16__ High Boots (pairs, I believe).  When I look in the stocks screen, I see a nice list of 16 High Boots, of quality varying from masterful to superior.  All are available.

However, any one army dwarf seems determined to wear only one boot.  For some it's the left, for some the right.  They wear two socks. Two gauntlets, etc.  But only one boot.  Of course, the other foot is the one the goblins go straight for so I end up with a bunch of 1-footed dwarves.

How do I fix this?

this exact thing happened with a couple of my dwarves.

afair the dwarfs tend to wear two socks on one foot and then try to put on the boots. Sadly a boot doesn't fit over two socks, so the dwarves are stuck wearing only one boot. You could try removing the socks from the screen or changing the order in which you added the items to the uniform(which i guess is "sock - sock - high boot - high boot"). I always used standard uniforms, so my knowledge is only about what i read here, though.

that doesn't seem to be it.

All three Dwarves:

fiber sock, right foot
steel high boot, right foot
fiber sock, left foot

I'll admit, this looks like it's a problem specific to LEFT feet...though I do believe I have seen a previous army dwarf indicate he 'plays for the other team' by wearing a left boot.

They're weird about stuff like this.  IIRC, the fix is to tell them to wear sock, boot, sock, boot (in that order) in their uniform, after which they will correctly wear two socks and two boots.
