Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Nyfe, A.K.A 'Now your fun ends!', 'Not yet functioning entirely' and 'New York Flower Embassy' is a game I am making while the other games I am making become too much of a chore. It is going to be some what inspired by the greatest game on the NES, Zelda II, although I will be adding all sorts of fun stuff. Vaguely planned functions include:
  • Procedurally generated overworld, with towns, forests, rivers, lakes, caves and castles to raid.
  • Procedurally generated instances with hopefully interesting monsters and fun combat. Because fun is totally a word you include as a feature.
  • A basic stat growth system.
  • Maybe multi player, if I feel like it, I'm certainly setting it up to support this later.
  • Better art than just a green rectangle. I'm working on it, ok?

So I will use this thread as a bit of a development blog, as hopefully that will inspire a bit more work than some of my other half baked projects.
Questions? Opinions? Personal death threats?

Include these features. Instant great game.

Can't tell you how much I nerd out over procedural platforms. Good luck to you, Max.

Comments:

The right edge of the pillar is a little wonky, you might want to modify it a bit.  The stonework all looks really new and shiny.  If you're in a ruin or really even a pretty new castle, it's not gonna look like that, you might want to age the stone a bit, throw on some cracks and such.

Thanks! I'm going to have a large set of blocks to choose from in castles/towers/ruins, so I could set up some older looking blocks, and some very much crumbling ones...
Thinking I might run a noise function over the tile set anyway to get rid of that shiny effect and make it look a little more like stone.

What language/engine/development platform are you using for this?

C#, XNA, for absurdly fast development. Most likely going to have to spend more time drawing sprites than programming.

I want controller support!   :P

To many side scrollers seem to be missing it these days.

Certainly you must see the profits of the help of a forum specializing in mods and tilesets for an ASCII game(if you didn't get it, it's DF)

This sounds very cool.  If you actually finish of course.

OK, I have to reload the save.
There was a bit of a problem regarding flashfreezing, a ballistae, and a barrel of dwarven ale. Gonna fix it up.

Been getting a bit of work done here and there. Content and art wise, as well as some more programming. Decided to make levels in three layers, that was pretty easy.

As for accepting help, in what way? These sort of projects come down to four components: Content, art, sound and programming. The only one that is going to issue any trouble here is sound...

This was mentioned in the happy thread back when I was playing Zelda II for the first time. It's easily challenged my opinion on which are the best Zelda games.

Watching this.

Oh yea, that was a different thing. That didn't work well due to crappy team work and lack of ability to compromise in anyway on every bodies behalf. Also, I was not going to make it into minecraft 2d on the sole basis that minecraft is popular, so yea, that was always doomed.

This is a new thing, and in three days working on my own, I have got a fair bit done. Sort of chose to make this now because we failed so hard before, so rise from the ashes, or something like that?

Ah too bad.

Is the combat in this project going to be similar to Zelda II? I ask because I long for another game that plays like that.
