speak for yourself. i like to think i'm the decedent of all those wiseass tricky Americans.  :P
You mean the same ones who knew to capitalize their I's, and put a dash between wise and ass?
Sorry, had to point out that you didn't have to be a descendant of a wise-ass to BE a wise-ass.

Cynic you say?
Are you sure you know what that means?
;)

(Note, I would LOL hard if traditional cynicism made a return in the US.)

Sounds about right. I harbor an extreme dislike for society, particularly the vast materialism present in pop culture. Money is the worst - you should be fully capable of obtaining everything you need on your own.

Capable? Yes.
Useful or even efficient? No. Advancements in technology this day in age don't come from farmers. You don't have lumberjacks making the new iPhones. Your OS for your computer was not coded by a man who hunted for his own food. The cars we drive today are not as efficient as they are because some bloke over there planting tulips figured out a way to make an even lighter alloy.

You are. I'm sure there are tens of thousands of sustenance-level farmers all over the world who would trade places with you in a heartbeat.

Here's some !!SCIENCE!! you should try out to test your theory.

Make a fortress where each individual dwarf is isolated from the others. Each has to grow their own food, brew their own booze, chop their own wood, the works.

See how its efficiency compares to a fart where individual dorfs specialise in a single trade.

It's a dwarf.  Their natural habitat is "trapped on the wrong side of a wall".

Flinging children halfway across the map to land in magma is good, wholesome fun, but extramarital reproduction?  Why, that's just unseemly!

In some cases, I agree with the the cynical philosophy.  Especially in regard to technology. If you don't understand the fundementals of a technology, then you cannot use it responsibly. (You don't need to be a kernel hacker to be afforded this benefit. Understanding loops, and the barebones fundementals of how a computer works is sufficient.)

Take for instance, nuclear weapons. A person who understands even the basics of these devices know why they are bad news with a capitol B. To a person who doesn't, they are a magical thing that everyone else is scared of, that makes you instantly command respect. If you don't understand why people are scared of them (and by association, why you shouldn't make them, and certainly never deploy one) then you have absolutely no business being anywhere near one.

While extreme, it points out the line distinctly through that extremity.  The issues with technology of lsser degrees of mortal peril still apply. It's why our moron politicians keep trying to legislate the internet, keep passing laws that technologists shit blood over, etc. Its because the people running the show have the "its magic!" View. They lack even the most simplistic knowledge of what they are making laws for.

The trend continues all the way down to ordinary people too, with people throwing away perfectly servicable hardware, adding to the toxic waste in landfills, simply because "it's broken", where "broken" is an easily corrected software issue.

Rather than being strict in the traditional cynical school's philosophy, and stating that you must be completely self-sufficient and self-supplying, (something that logistically cannot be done in modern times), I view that you should posess at least the most basic understanding of how everything you make use of and depend on works. This is not so that you can effect repairs (though that is a handy side effect if your knowledge is deep enough), but rather to guide your use of those things toward being proper and responsible.

Far too many people are willfully ignorant of far too many things today. It is the cause of a huge glut of world problems.

So, it has entered the "meta-philosophy" stage now? The philosophy on the philosophy of political satire threads, as they degrade and derail?

Is there a godwin analog for discussions of politics?

But really, I'll have to admit I BS a bit too much. I've got a question (that totally isn't an attempt to change the subject). If someone tells you that they are a compulsive liar, do you believe them?
