How do you "See" your dwarfs?
« on: February 27, 2012, 03:03:46 pm »

This is a subjective question and I am interested in seeing how people answer it.  With many different sources of dwarfs I have a mental image of how my dorfs look.

That Elmore painting was in the complete dwarfs handbook for D&D.  I had forgotten about it,  Thanks for posting that!

Viking helmets did not have horns but fantasy helmets do. Dwarfs existed in nordic mythology and they made weapon artifacts for nordic gods like Mjölnir and Gungnir. Vikings belived in epic dwarfs. But is it impossible for dwarfs to encrust helmets with horns in dwarf fortress? ;)

Dwarves can't look like that painting.

They don't have hand carts yet.

Dwarves look like little happy faces almost all of the time. Sometimes I try to imagine how a scene might look in my fortress rendered some other way, but all the fantasy dwarves I can think of just don't fit them very well for one reason or another. I end up conceiving of a dwarf as a hidden list of attributes contained under a happy face with a (tiny, almost ant-like) personality and history.

Besides, dwarves' apparent actions are much more representative of who they are than their physical appearance. It's easier to remember the hero of the Dragon-Siege Disaster than bearded_randomized_list_06214.

My Dwarfs appear to all be the same race, amethyst eyes, sepia hair and ecru (grey-brown) skin.

My Dwarfs are all ghosts.

That picture is *SO* adorable. I squee'd for about 5min before I noticed the dwarf which is coincidentally how I view my dwarves as well.

I'm guilty of being influenced before playing DF, so I see them basically like this:

http://threepanelsoul.com/2008/04/21/on-dwarven-fortresses/

http://threepanelsoul.com/2008/05/12/on-trade-goods/

http://threepanelsoul.com/2009/07/21/on-mixed-economies/

Though the ladies I do imagine beardless (the horror!) but they make up for it with the insane amount of spiky hair they sport. Yes, I'm lazy and don't feel like posting the images on photbucket or some such and hotlinking is evil. Comic love anyways since you might browse the archives.

Mine just kinda chill unless and until I give them something to do (alright, that's like 96% of the time, but still, they're mostly happy, calm, fairly reasonable folk, interested in their world and fairly kind to each other....  (What? I'm playing wrong?  Nah :P)

I see them kinda a synthesis of these images.

I always liked Paul Bonners dwarves. I have a book of his work but can't find many decent pictures of his dwarves online. This painting tutorial by him has a handful, I prefer his pencil work to his full colour, though.

To be completely honest I don't have a fixed image of them. There are a few other examples of dwarves from other fantasy artists which appeal in equal measure for different reasons.

"The helmet menaces with spikes of cow bone."  ...or something like that.
