I can't wait! I might pre-order it, to show support. I think a little section on improving the game's appearance might be in order, with notes about prettying up ASCII with square tilesets & colours, and of course mentions of Phoebus, Ironhand, Mayday, for the graphic sets. Goes a long way to making the game nicer, I think, and wouldn't take up much room in the book.

If you want to get notified when updates come through in future then you should probably preorder through O'Reilly's website (is that possible?). I believe there will also be deals on buying both the print and ebook at the same time (the ebook gets the updates, obviously, the book just looks sexy).

Truly Spearhills is a paradise.

The catch is that the guide is written for actually written for an as yet unreleased corporate knockoff:

Dwarf Fortress: Slaves to the CoD God!

On a more serious note, this is certainly interesting project; and thanks for the tutorial that made DF playable for me!

I hope to keep the amount of rape here down to a minimum, though.

I'm surprised there's not more posts in this thread. Likely because the announcement of the book was made partway through the thread. Here's hoping the book sells well and garners interest in Dwarf Fortress.

I only started playing this game seriously a few days ago, and I am hooked!  I've learned quite a lot from the wiki, but a resource like this would be invaluable.  I like to play full screen with default graphics, and I use my tablet for wiki access.  Having this on my tablet in addition could help even further.

This is my first post to the forums, and I'm using it to say that I am definitely getting this book - certainly digitally, and quite probably physically.

The cover needs to be an engraving of a cat. Simple as that. In that typical O'Reily style.

"On the cover is an engraving of a cat."

Cats, of course, being the most dangerous creature in DF. They will make your fortress unplayable but without killing a single dwarf.

Yup, it will be available in all ebook formats, including Kindle. You can even buy a print and an ebook copy at the same time so you can get the ebook version and updates but still have something for the coffee table ;)

As for posts in this thread - don't worry, I will start a new thread closer to launch time!

I pre-ordered a few days ago as well, from the O'Reilly website. They didn't appear to have a deal for both print and digital versions for pre-orders, however. Here's hoping the digital version is cheaper if you purchased the print copy.

This sounds. . . kind of awkward, but awesome nonetheless!
Best of luck with your book TinyPirate!

Thanks!

I am not sure the "combo" deal is available yet. Keep an eye on your pre-order? You may have to change it before it ships? I will try and kep this thread updated until launch so you have warning in case you need to canx and re-order.
