Author Topic: If I'm already a necromancer, can I become a vampire? I'm having some trouble  (Read 4871 times)

I'm a necromancer, and went to kill a vampire and drank his blood. I've waited for a few days, and I haven't gotten a red "thirsty" message. I figured that maybe it was because being a necromancer made me immune to hunger and thirst anyway, and went to feed on a sleeping person.

Nope. I'm standing over and next to sleeping people but I don't get the option to drink from them in the (e)at menu.

At character creation I gave myself "above-average disease resistance" because I didn't want to get an infected wound before learning the secrets of life and death, could that be why I'm not catching the Porphyric Hemophilia? I'm getting kind of worried that I accidentally screwed by chances of becoming a vampire by being a necromancer first.

I know you can only be one of either vamp or werecreature at once, and then a necromancer on top of that.

That's the point, it wouldn't be as fun to crush their souls if they didn't have souls to begin with.

The one time I successfully became a vampire, I was already a necromancer, so that's not the issue. I just had a similar issue myself, though, so there's probably something else going on.

I wonder if it's only a chance-based thing when you drink the blood. I'm a vampire, and I kept drinking as much blood as I could before leaving the site. I didn't get the thirst message immediately, but I had already been drinking blood from creatures and stuff to stave off normal thirst. Not sure if any of that helps.

Also, how did you become a necromancer? I'm trying to figure that out right now.

You go to a necromancer tower (purple capital I's on the map), find a slab (displayed as an "n") that has "the secrets of life and death" on it, and read it (hope you have novice reading skill...).
.

Oh, and be grateful you're already an undead so the zombies will be friendly. the towers are completely PACKED with them.

ARGH DOUBLE POST! Sorry, I meant to hit "edit" but hit "quote" instead.
So, back to the vampire thing, you think it's a good plan for me to fill up a backpack with vampire blood, then just keep drinkingx3 and waiting until I'm infected? Of course, it won't be easy to figure out if I'm infected.

Maybe I can take all the blood to a river, go under a bridge and just keep drinking till I stop getting the drowning message.

Sweet. Also, do I need to be given a quest to go to the tower in order for it to appear on the map? (like with camps and lairs and stuff)

Your weapon and armor should have vampire blood on them, and wherever you killed the vampire, the floor and walls should be covered with it. Just drink a bunch of that.

Nah, you don't need to get a quest to have the necromancer tower show up on the map. Heck, you can even see it from the embark screen in fortress mode, or the map info that's presented to you after genning a world.

What is the best indicator that I have become a vampire when I have? As a necromancer I can't just look for when my hunger/thirst/drowsiness goes away.

If you are a vampire there should be a little "undead" or "monster" symbol thing in the bottom left beside your name I think. I heard somewhere that in order to officially become a vampire you have to drink vampire blood then feed on a person (pressing g while adjacent to some unconscious guy). About 3 days after I drank vampire blood I discovered I could "feed" then I saw the undead symbol. I ended up bleeding to death somehow though :I

You use 'e' to feed, not 'g', IIRC.

Also, that I'm-a-vampire indicator won't show up if he's a necromancer already, sad to say :-/.

I also noticed that when my vampire adventurer died, and then I came back with a different adventurer and drank his blood (which somehow hadn't dried up yet) I did not become a vampire.  Maybe there is some chance as to which vampires are "infectious"?  Or maybe vampire infection is somewhat buggy?  It's my previous adventurer wasn't in the "vampire" state when he died - not sure if this matters?  I drank a whole bunch of my vampire adventurer's blood, so I don't think any randomness with respect to getting the infection per drink should have mattered.

Fortunately I had some proven effective vampire blood preserved for all eternity inside a backpack...

Yeah, my problem is that I'm drinking vampire blood but when I'm next to unconscious people I'm not getting the option to drink from them. You said you had to wait a few days? I guess I can try that?

At the moment, in my save I'm sneaking and right next to the vampire with all his allies dead (in this room, at least, he probably has tons more patsies in other parts of the dungeon nearby), because I don't want to continue the save till after I'm safely a vampire.

EDIT:

Hmmm, is some vampires not being contagious a bug? perhaps we should report this?

Also, your comment on having blood from a confirmed-to-be-infectious vampire reminded me, that in my previous world I got infected by a vampire law-giver and due to some weirdness with this world generating differently despite the exact same seeds and parameters, is now a farmer. I can check legends as to where she is (IIRC she's a farmer or a fisherwoman or something less glamourous than a Law-Giver) and go kill her again.

UPDATE: Killed her, drank her blood, and I am now a vampire. So yes, it DOES seem that only SOME vampires are contagious. This is weird. But is it a bug?

well you don't have to wait a few days, I just said I did. And actually when I pressed "g" near sleeping civvies it said "feed: so-so northeast or whatever"

I think it changes the color of the indicator. That Ñ next to your name should change from purple (Necromancer) to red (Vampire).

It'd be cool if it does, but my experience with that one necromancer/vampire of mine was that it stayed purple. I did get red thirst, though.
