Part 5 : Iberia Crumbles

Reports of endless hordes serving under the bull flag kept flowing in, and even the fact that Iberians marching for Saiganthe have turned north, and fled into the mountains, didn't keep the doomsayers from preaching about our impossible task.
These blind fools have shown me the way, however, as Iberians were marching in such an abundance only as long, as their "wonder" in Toletum was giving them confidence, and only as long, as their king was breathing.
(Wonder declaration is THE building that gives AI all of their bonuses. Insane amounts of gold, troops and happiness, in short. Our only chance against huge nations is to grab it ASAP.)


All of those, who fled from the battlefields in Summer 261, were here now. The cowards.. The fools.


Without siege weaponry, assaulting these walls would be very costly.. If not for two factors. First one, being our spies, that did an amazing job opening the gates.
Second one, being Iberian narrow-mindness. When our forces stood ready at the southern gates to the city, Spaniards were too blind to see anything else.


Just a handful of pathetic defenders guarded other gates. I've tested them myself.


Refugees from summer battles tried reinforcing the gate, but it was all for nothing, as these Barbarians forget about bravery, when they see their friends run.



Finally, Iberians realized what was happening, and started abandoning the walls, to regroup at the city square. Where Their cowardly general was presented with a dilemma..
..Signal the troops and die now..
..Or block this one more blow..


He seemed indecisive, so we've guided him to the right answer.


Iberians were running towards the city square from all directions. Greek forces that stormed the now-abandoned walls were right behind them.


Though we've lost some good men on this day, Iberians have lost them all.


Some say, that i am too reckless, and that i may have to consider commanding from the back lines, like many generals do.
Toletum had such a general. So did other Iberian and Carthaginian armies. They have all died, far from the battlefield, and thus with limited knowledge of what's going on.
(Just look at this bloody trait.. How the fuck am i supposed to... ARGH! Alexander was trying to be Dick Mountainjoy, not vice versa!)


Besides.. Only the brave enjoy glorious and noble deaths.

The capture of Toletum has changed everything. Iberians started loosing their wars against Gauls and Free Cities, unable to field more troops, with units fleeing from the field, and coffers emptying. It was the perfect moment to capture Numantia, and split Iberian lands in half. Cutting supply and communication lines, and preparing a field to face the survivors from the north.
Aristogeiton of Tarentum, the general who captured Saiganthe, and led sieges against Punic cities, has finally assembled his army of mercenaries from Spain. Strengthened with two ballistae crews, and news of Mountainjoy's advance from the west. The two generals were to meet in the burning, bloody streets of Numantia, where Iberian fate could be sealed.
(Aristo has many command traits, but also plenty of absolutely ABYSMAL traits that make him useless and harmful inside ANY city. Dick has -11 hp from his own traits.. He also has a penalty to command from "Hard of hearing" combat wound.)


If he could, Aristo would sacrifice the lives of every mercenary serving under him, to achieve his goals. It became obvious to everyone during the siege of Numantia.
The fact that Iberians had stone walls protecting the city surprised everyone.
The fact, that we had four ballistae, made it a moot point.


Celtic mercenaries, poorly equipped and trained, were sent into the breach. Their task was simple, defeat the cavalry forces that were sent to guard the breach. As nothing else would be fast enough. Celts were charging while the walls were still standing, with ballistae bolts flying over their heads. Iberians arrived just as the walls fell, and started preparing the formation.. But mercenaries were already there..


Commander Mountainjoy was marching from the south-west with only the very best of his army alongside him. They marched slowly, as Aristo needed time, to fulfill his assignment. "Who am I, to deny him his glory?" was said to be Mountainjoy's response to a question regarding the slow march.


An eighth of the mercenaries that were sent into the breach have died against an inferior foe, but they were ordered to push onward recklessly. Timing was everything. Iberians would soon move from the gates to defend the walls, and the field had to be ready by then.


Caetratii were sent north, on and along the walls, to meet the impending Iberian reinforces.


While the Celts rushed to open the defenseless south gates. Once he noticed that, Mountainjoy ordered all of his men to run.


Caetratii were no match against Iberian swordsmen, and were soon forced into a desperate defense on the ground, and on the walls.


This is when the ballistae started firing again. How many bolts have hit Stworcagradian troops, instead of the enemies? We may never know. One thing only remains certain, the walls had to hold, as the stone tower that Caetratii were guarding was invaluable.
Whatever it takes to hold the line.

With Commander Mountainjoy's forces pouring inside the city from the south, Iberians had to refrain from sending everyone to retake the eastern breach.


This was exactly what both Aristo and Dick have hoped for.
Caetrarii delayed the foes enough, for the elite hoplites to form inside the city, waiting for Iberians to test their mettle.


Those serving under the Bull flag, failed. Iberian counter-attack, failed. Spanish last hope, failed. That failure was punished by death.


While some Iberian troops were still marching towards Aristo's army, those that decided to reinforce the city square - or have fled there in fear - were cut off and cut down swiftly.


The square itself soon fell, and the Iberian general, along with it. There was no retreat possible for the enemy, unless they decided to flee from the city itself. But even then, the rest of Mountainjoy's forces were surrounding the city just for that scenario.


With the city center captured, and Spanish forces nearly surrounded, both generals pushed onward, for their armies to meet before the battle ends. It wasn't either required nor an optimal solution, but the symbolism behind it could shut the naysayers.


Besides, both of them believed it to be a good challenge for the troops, which - at this point - were sure to win regardless.


It stung Aristo's pride, when it was Mountainjoy who appeared as first, fighting near the walls that Tarentian general has just captured not long ago.


But his perfectly - although costly - executed plan has met with silent approval from Mountainjoy, and Aristo was given free hand in Iberia, as he has proven to be up to the task.


Not that Iberia falling back into Spanish, Gallic or even Roman hands would sadden or concern The Conqueror, as more valuable lands were in Mountainjoy's sight.


But it too had its gems.

I believe he mentioned in the extended cultures forums that he ran into a bug that corrupted the save and prevented continuation.

I can offer you the Thracian campaign in video, instead. Syracuse was lost indefinitely.

In Thrace i'm giving enemies regions via cheats, and increase their city pop. We are, so far, undefeated. But i am playing a very passive way, to allow the AI to grow insanely huge.

If i have the time in the future, and am asked to do so, i might start another image LP on B12, but somehow i doubt it. It was amazing, and this is the best community under the sun, but text LP's take too much time.
