Edit : Played through until our invasion begins. Some people will be happy. Should Dick succeed in Spain, he shall arrive at our capital to meet with ze council.

Part 4 : Summer, 261BC

Before we proceed, i'll just toss this screenshot in, to clear things up. Punics lost their last city in Iberia.. Yada Yada...


Now back to Dick Mountainjoy :
Starvation is the key enemy of an army, and marching through half a continent through hostile territory, is bound to starve one's forces. And thus the offensive in Iberia had to wait, until the supplies are sufficient to march again.
It wasn't until summer, 261BC, that our forces made the move.


Land routes were avoided, so that Saiganthe is left defenseless. Aristogeiton of Tarentum made sure that the attack was swift and final. Personally.


The city fell, because it had to.


Yet the Iberians were not blind, and an army was already on route to the city, before the attack even took place. Saiganthe wasn't suited for stopping armies, and the small force that besieged it, wasn't going to change that.


Arsa had to fall, and both armies left east of it had to be crushed if Saiganthe had any hope of survival. A worthy task.


Iberian walls, even though they were made of wood, were an obstacle even for large armies. Tightly packed watchtowers, walls holding entire units of archers.. and the entire town built on a hill.


Even if that defense fell, another elevation was present at the city center, where brave defenders had the advantageous position they needed to tip the balance.


All that was required of Iberians to hold the city for long enough, was for Aingeru to arrive in time. In time to reinforce the city against attack, and aid Avaros the Deceased, once known as Avaros of the Lusitanii.


Aingeru DID arrive, and had a clear way into the city, obstructed only by a small cavalry force.
It is my guess, that the loss of his troops to the aforementioned cavalry force disheartened him.


With Arsa out of the way, just two armies were holding the main army in the west... Well.. Three armies..


Those barbarians managed to ambush us.. Who would've thought..

Now that it has been said let's excuse Dick for a moment, and deal with this ambush. Iberian scum have positioned themselves in three groups, nearly surrounding us. The flanks are strong, but the front.. nope.
While our army is : 3 cavalry up front, 3 skirmishers, mix of archers and infantry.. and hoplite, hoplite, phalanx, hoplite in the back.


The correct thing to do, would be crushing the weak front and go from there, right?
No. We charge through the pathetic Iberian infantry and go for the kill. Enemy general.
What else? Don't move the ranged units back, instead move other units in front of them. Keep firing!
Right flank is where all the butchers from the back go. Front WILL Be stopped by the skirmishers.


It's over already. Done. Won.





Iberians did muster one more attack, directly at Dick Mountainjoy. Their cavalry tried their best to catch him off guard, and they did.


In the end, it mattered not.


It never does.

Barbarians, subhumans, scum.. Their ambush didn't even slow us down. Their armies were in full retreat, but we've caught them at Guadiana river. (i believe. Either that or Tagus)


Iberian armies, if merged together and formed a line, would be a mighty foe.
Too bad, that they would never get a chance to do that. (ariving from different places on the field, it was possible to cut them off before they reform into a single army)


Asturian Axemen, were amazing fighters that could hold their line for hours even against our hoplites.
Too bad, they never had a chance to present it. (First screenshot was taken 3,36 seconds into 10:12 pm)

(this one was 9,62. 2 wedges and 9/3/3 general charging together from different directions are a rape train)


Strict and exact orders were given to the captains. Hold the initial line. If enemy charges to aid their comrades, advance. If not : stay in formation.


I had feared that some of them would act like fools, and for their own glory charge forward.


But some of them served our cause from the battle with Mamertines onward, up until now. They held their ground. Didn't charge even when enemies were within pila throw.


Only after a direct signal - horn - skirmishers advanced. And only the groups picked earlier. Their opponents were overpowering both in quality and quanity, but this was the only way to lure them out.


This has made our task much, much easier.


Carrion birds were feasting for many days after, or so i was told.


All three Iberian armies were crushed, and city of Arsa fell..
Thus it wasn't fear that held us in place, or attempts to start relations with Iberians, it was hunger. Hunger delayed my actions until summer of 261BC.


One can not understand hunger, without first experiencing it.
Just as one can not understand poverty, without suffering it first.

So the Spainish Iberians are just as crappy in this mod as they are in Vanilla Rome? Or did they actually improve, but just not enough to pose a challenge to Dick Montainjoy? I'm just curious, because you seem to be stomping them just as easily as before Well, you seem to crush everyone, but you know what I mean.

Turdetani (spearmen), Ambakaro (heavy infantry) and Lancers (Heavy Cavalry) are elite Iberian units that go as far as "elite" can, excluding Spartans.
They didn't have any of these, but we're talkin' Sacred Band type of units, who hold the entire flank on their own. They fielded Asturian Axemen, Scutarii, the yellow-shielded mercenaries (that we use too) and tons of the basic infantry (Much like Iberian Infantry from vanilla, except with decent stats and ranged attack. On VH it's great stats, great morale and ranged attack of winning+1)

Oh, and Iberians have some cities in Gaul too. That's where most of their forces are.. Did i say "most"? Why.. yes. You didn't think those 3 armies guarding a city were all there was

It really is a matter of "How many" not "If".
The 'FUN' begins when we taunt all the nations of the east, and while we're there, Romans start landing in Africa and on Sicily... 

Then again, despite the victories, we still lost ~500 men in those 4 battles. Mostly mercenaries, but at least a few soldiers - that can not be replaced in Iberia or even Africa - have died. Hoplites, Cretans.. All irreplaceable without visiting Sicily.

Now, should we succeed in Spain, we will visit Sicily on the way back, but it gives you an idea about just how much does each death cost us. While those bloody Iberians pump out units like crazy.

Oh! Did i mention that some enemy cities have a special script, that spawns a full stack of all-elite units whenever you attack it? One does not simply walk into Rome.

All of the above? Tip of the iceberg.

Joys of AOR based recruiting. I at least get relatively easy and safe source of moving replacements via Black Sea with my Pontos game. Sicily -> Far Iberia must be a bitch.

How easy is it to get a healing ancillary (if you haven't one already) in this mod? I don't know if they stack, but I've noticed that having even one Chirugeon/Herbalist/Doctor with my general decreases the amount of casualties by a hefty sum. They're ridiculously easy to get by building healers (hospitals) and using second rate family members to transfer all the best ancillaries to my front line commanders.

Also : It doesn't go any more challenging than that, unless i went with some ridiculous self-restrictions like "only half-stacks" and so on. We had 1 cavalry unit during the entire Punic campaign, for crying out loud..  Still, it was just "The tutorial level" so far.
