Odd Dwarves. Threat?
« on: February 26, 2012, 01:06:33 am »

So I have a couple odd dwarves I suspect of being 'wrong' somehow.  I forgot who one was, but there's one I pegged as a hunter.
It's been a year and noone's come up dead and she hasn't gone werewolf or anything, but she arrived with a lot of bone and fur jewelry and such and has a load of kills.

21 kills, mostly animals and a few animal-people.

Should I be worried?  And when I find the other one (who I am convinced is a vampire), what should I do?  Is there a good test for if they're cursed and dangerous?  'Cuz hey, i'm a tolerant guy.  You can be a bloodsucker, as long as you prey on othersElves and not my guys.

Well the hunter is probably fine. Since migrants are all pulled from historical figures a hunter will arrive at your fort with a list of pretty much all they kills they ever made while hunting before coming to your fort and covered with trophies from these kills. Now if they are covered in trophies made from dwarf bits, then you should start worrying/planning how to weaponize them.

lock the vampire in a small room. then wait and observe.

does he get thirsty? vampires drink booze but they don't actually need to drink. if he doesn't get thirsty or hungry ... you got yourself a vampire.

a locked up and harmless vampire :D

Say, couldn't you just build a column somewhere, order the vampire onto it, and then remove the access point? Seems like a rather good way both to advertise your fortress and keep watch.

Witch test.  Lock him in a room.  If he dies of thirst, he's alright.  If he survives, then kill him for being a vampire!

well it's a not a guy ... but it IS a vampire. i'm sure of it. you can ...

1. execute her by some manner of trap
2. imprison her and throw her unwanted migrants
3. let her run around and do her thing undisturbed
4. create a well of un-life and turn EVERYONE into vampires

I tried feeding one a tiger blood barrel but she refused to touch it.

Maybe if it was dwarf blood ... :/

I had a fort with vampires. I wanted just my nobles to be vamps, but when I opened the well, a bunch of peasants and cheese makers rushed in and drank. A few years later my fort crumbled. Every time someone would turn up dead, everyone, even the vampire that did it, would be super unhappy. With how interconnected dwarves are now, having a vampire fort is difficult. I suppose the trick is to not make a meeting hall (which I had, and way too many people hung around it. The many many children kept throwing parties.) Maybe put a chair and table in everybody's room and make them separate dining halls. If you are going to let vampires in your fort, that is. But all the married couples and children really make it a bitch.

I had free beds in my barracks and it seemed like they fed from there and the hospital more than anything. My vampire chief medical dwarf would feed from people non-fatally a lot, though he killed a fair bit, as well.

And the vampires won't feed from barrels of blood. I bought a barrel of crow blood, and my vamps fed on others rather than touch it, though I never tried locking a vamp in with one.

My vampires are locked up in my lever room. Gaurantees I always get the lever I want, when I need it:p

All of my dwarfs go into a "processing chamber." When one get's thirsty, hungry, or falls asleep, I release it from the burrow. The last ones to want a drink, food, or sleep, I move to a "post-processing chamber." If they still don't want to eat, drink, or sleep, they go to the lever room:p

Off of the lever room, I have the managers office, so work orders are always available to be filled. I have enough vamps now, I'm going to add a bookkeeper vamp, as well.

For some reason, they elected a vamp as mayor (idiots), luckily you can reassign that like any other noble position, so I booted him from office so liaisons wouldn't get emptied:p

Augh!  Turns out one of my gemsetters is also a vamp, and got the only other gemsetter.  x.x  He had NO outward signs of vampirism.

Seems I have an epidemic.
