Caravan won't leave
« on: February 25, 2012, 06:47:05 pm »

I'm playing the latest version, 34.02, and my first caravan won't leave. I got the announcement that they were leaving, but they didn't.

I checked the Trade Depot access, and it's supposed to be accessible. Just in case, I removed a couple of trees so that they could exit from the top of the map, too, if they want. I really can't figure out the problem.

A few things that might affect this (or might not):

1) My leader went into a strange mood just seconds before the caravan arrived, so the diplomat immediately left in disgust. (Apparently, the leader isn't considered the leader while in that mood?) But the caravan itself came ahead and traded with my dwarfs with no problem.

2) I have a moat all around my embark site, but there are bridges at two locations. In fact, they crossed one of them to get to the Trade Depot. Nothing has changed since then.

3) They arrived in late fall, and it was winter before I got the announcement that they were leaving. (But I don't know why that would matter.)

4) There is a pasture, and a few cage traps, in the way. But, again, they crossed those with no problem when they arrived. (And the pasture is big enough that the animals could move out of the way, if that matters.)

Is there anything I can do to force them to leave? I could deconstruct the Trade Depot, if I had to. Would that help?

Otherwise, is there any way I can find out why they're not leaving?

Thanks

I would try deconstructing your depot.
If they don't leave after that, you should start training some military because the guards that came with the caravan will lose their minds after a while and start killing everyone and everything...

How much stuff did you trade them? If it was in bins, did you select the whole bin or the individual items in the bin?

The leaving announcement is always in winter for the dwarven caravan. Traders start packing up about a month from the date they arrive on your map.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

If you traded them a bunch of stuff then it's possible that they have been spending all of the time slowly loading up their new stuff into their wagons. You can solve this by opening up the designate menu, selecting the "cancel designation", and then clicking and holding on any random spot with your mouse. They will load up most of their stuff incredibly quickly during this sudo-time. (Be warned that cats can adopt dwarves druing this time as well though).

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

I really didn't have a lot to trade them, not nearly as much as I usually do. But this is my first caravan, and most of the migrants I've gotten so far have been children.

Still, I'll try that 'cancel designation' trick. If that doesn't work, I'll try deconstructing the Trade Depot. (Note that the Depot is accessible.)

Thanks for the suggestions!

Yup, that worked. Thanks for the help!

I've never had this happen before, but it's been a year and a half since my last fortress. Always before, no matter how much I'd traded them, they moved out as soon as I got the message they were leaving. And this time, I really didn't have much to trade them (of course, I didn't buy much of their stuff, either, so I suppose they had to load all that back up, too).

I guess I don't know if this is a (minor) bug or a feature, but either way, your suggestion fixed it. Thanks again.
