Forgive me if the following is common knowledge:

No one seems to mind if you raid warehouses.  At the very least, you can sell a bunch of loot, but often you can find good leather armor and if you are patient there is usually some metal armor in there.
On a similar note, no one seems to mind if you take food from their homes.  Usually just berries, but they are sufficient to satiate your appetite.

Hopefully others will share general survival tips.

If in a tomb donīt step next to any of the sarcophagi ...
that is, unless you think you are capable enough to handle a mummy and animated forms of all the skeletons around you ... in this case step next to the sarcophagus

Abandoned fortresses are great places to find stuff

Travelling in a group enables you to rest in the wilderness without getting rudely awakened by bogeymen

If you havenīt told the game that dwarves and elves should build cities (instead of mountain halls/ forest retreats) before creating a world donīt expect to find anything at the site where their mountain halls / forest retreats are supposed to be located (you can tell the game that dwarves/elves should build cities by changing [DEFAULT_SITE_TYPE:] in entity_default.txt into CITY )

Keeps and fortresses. Go to the main building-thing. Thre is usually lots of armor pieces lying around.

Also use Sneaking always. Sneak when you are not in danger, so ambusher could train. By ambushing and throwing you can easily wipe out large bandit grouds without any danger at all.
