hunters don't hunt
« on: February 25, 2012, 10:23:52 am »

tried both with starting dwarves and not, even with equipment available they just slack off with "no job"
i wanted to make a couple of legendary hunters/marksdwarves to slow down (but i heard they can actually hold on their own) sieges and ambushes since regular training is broken (but i always used to train them this way because it's faster)

is this somewhat related to recruits not using archery range?

Hunters are working for me and doing a fine job of sending kobold thieves and goblin snatchers to the afterlife. A bit obvious but have you checked that the hunting job is actually on. Dwarves arriving as migrants may be called Hunter/Ranger (I've got about a dozen Rangers) but the actual hunting labour is not enabled automatically - feature of the new release it seems. If hunting is on then they should be whinging about lack of equipment or bolts, at least that's what mine do. Particularly the latter, perhaps it my imagination but their rate of fire seems to have gone up and some of the animals they hunt get turned into veritable pincushions before they give up the ghost.

bolts, crossbows, hunting labor actually enabled, and available, huntable animals are all possible solutions to your problem.

Do they have quivers, bolts and crossbows in the inventory?
Have all you allowed the hunters any bolts of relevant material in the military ammunition submenu?

quivers are the thing that I always forget. you might have under-produced them and not seen the "cancel make quiver, need leather_mat" message. check that they have quivers.

Clearly running multiple missions at the same time is a terrible idea.  The epic battle to see which team can cock it up worse has escalated again.

And Larry kinda gets blueballed in all this; just left with a raging bone spear and no where to put it.

Horses come in packs. Didn't you hear? They are much cheaper if you buy in bulk.

Cancel the hunt job, make sure they don't try again, then have all their hunting gear stockpiled. Once the crossbows, bolts, quivers are piled you should try turning it back on again, see if they pick it all up and then get to it.

Make sure your starting hunter did not shoot all his bolts at some weasels and ran out of ammo.

Yeah, but with the blindbags, you don't know who you're gonna get.
