Livestream -- RedKing's Asian Cinema Palace!
« on: February 24, 2012, 04:45:56 pm »

So...back before the new year, I used to do these semi-regular Livestreams of Asian movies. Had a lot of fun before attendance died down to where it was pretty much just scriver and me. College exams and whatnot were partly to blame, as was the ever-shifting schedule and midweek showings. Now that I could reliably stay up late on Friday nights, I'm keen on restarting them if there's interest. So I'm dropping this thread to see if there's interest. For reference of the kind of movies I've shown, so far we've screened:

The Good, The Bad and the Weird
Shaolin Soccer
Iron Monkey
Mr. Vampire
Chinese Ghost Story
Green Snake

Still on my slate to show:
Drunken Master (Jui kuen)
Once Upon a Time in China
Hero (Ying xiong)
Rashomon
Duel to the Death (Xian si jue)
Shinobi: Heart Under Blade
Painted Skin (Hua pi zhi: Yin yang fa wang)
Wild Zero
SARS Wars (Khun krabii hiiroh)
Touch of Zen
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Wo hu can long) *or* House of Flying Daggers (Shi mian mai fu) -- can't decide
Not One Less (Yi ge dou bu neng shao)
Beijing Bicycle (Shiqi sui de dan che)

I try to pair them up thematically and do double-features, but 4 hours or so is a lot of time to invest. I'll have to figure out a better format that doesn't zombify people by the end of it.

EDIT: Oh, and here's the link to my stream when it's up. (For one thing, people can go check out previous broadcasts in the library):

I'm ashamed that I've only ever seen Shaolin Soccer in that list.

Have you considered God of Cookery Redking? It's like Shaolin Soccer, but with professional chefs instead of soccer players. Also by Stephen Chow.

Hero (assuming it's the one I'm thinking of), House of Flying Daggers and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon are all very good. I haven't seen or heard of any of the rest.

Maybe it's parasitic. It never loses its flavor because you eventually die from having your nutrients stolen by it.

Good, Bad and Weird was definitely one of the best movies I saw last year, I keep forgetting I'm supposed to show it to everyone I know.

Also, for suggestions, how about that one about that one emperess, "something golden flower something"? I can't remember too much of it, but it feels like I thought it was a good one.

Oh I have a good one actually. It's only kind of asian. It's based on an american missionary in China.

The Inn of the Sixth Happiness. Is good!

.. and Tora Tora Tora, again only semi asian.

Y'know, I *should* try to nab that one. I've had some friends tell me it was hilarious, but I've never actually seen it myself.

No Ip Man? D:
That's another one I need to add. Korean cinema tends to be a big blind spot for me. I'm trying to educate myself, because I was so taken by Kang-ho Song's performance (the guy who's my current avatar) that I started digging and found that he has a fairly long and acclaimed career in Korean film, and that Korean film in general is freakin' gritty as hell. There are very few happy endings in these movies, and large body counts.

I've also been impressed by the cinematography of Korean film in general. It compares favorably with the high-budget productions from Japan, Taiwan and the PRC, with less WTFJAPAN? than Japan, and less grandiosity than the mainland Chinese epics.

I think the other reason I tend to unconsciously sideline Korean films is that Korea in general is a blind spot for me. Unlike China and Japan, I don't know any of the language, and just a bare gloss of its history.  :-[

Departures is easily my favorite Asian film, but I don't know if it's in your tastes.
