petrified wood?
« on: February 24, 2012, 12:03:46 pm »

can you obtain "petrified" wood logs in any way in fortress mode? i seem to be coming across MANY MANY "petrified wood coffer"s in adventure and was wondering if its possible to get it in fortress or not, if you can then it needs to be added to the wiki wood page, it shows up as bright red.

300 human/elf/dwarf/goblin/kobold bodies 20 random animal/fish/bird bodies and 3 dragon bodies all in one backpack. fun stuff.

It's among the most useless of all stones and is interesting in exactly zero ways, though.

It's not mechanically interesting, but I think it is thematically interesting.  It's very rare, though, so if you want to make lots of petrified wood objects your best bet is to import it.

How can you say this? It is one of the few red materials in the game.

Petrified Wood is my FAVORITE useless stone. It's taking an organic material, wood, and turning it into an inorganic material, stone! It takes what the elves treasure most and "corrupts" it into a rock! At that, its a rock shaped like a log, making it all the more horrifying for elves to see your fortress adorned with it. And, as a stone, petrified wood is free from the elves' logging limits which go ignored anyways. Basically, petrified wood is the symbol of dwarven disregard for what the elves treasure most.

But others might prefer to have the mess contained behind windows to avoid tracking blood all over the their nice, color coordinated floor patterns. Kind of the Ozzy Osborne vs. Martha Stewart debate.

I tend to put Notes over my levers and my dining rooms tend to be tasteful rather than gaudy like a rainbow. :U

Tasteful as in elf-babyback rib tasteful or minimalist faux-postelf pretentious tasteful?  Personally, I find the abstract "goblin paint" splatters to be more fetching (I made my dining room with a sunroof, was opening after a siege broke and a thief happened to drop by for dinner)

Are there even any other bright red stones?

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.

Kaolinite and bauxite look better though.

Also, I love using olivine and rutile, if I have them.

Petrified wood only shows up in tiny amounts though, so you can't really use it as well.
