Is there a way to know if you're right or wrong when you accuse or do they always respond with "Calm Yourself! What is this madness?"

If you're given a quest to kill an evil beasty in disguise, accusing him will make him do a little evil villain speech and then instantly turn hostile and be labelled as a Vampire or whatever he was supposed to be.

The rest of the time I've never gotten anything except a generic message about being mistaken, so I get the feeling that there basically are no vampires until they get generated as targets for your latest quest.

I found a vampire in the legends and the accusation worked against him. And I wasn't doing a quest.

If you accuse someone of being a vampire but they are not, they will say "Calm Yourself! What is this madness?"
If you accuse someone of being a vampire and they are, they will reveal themselves and fight you.

Vampires are apparently incapable of saying "No man, I'm perfectly normal!?"

no vampire should be generated onsite...  they should all be historical figures.
