What are some symptoms of save game corruption?
« on: February 23, 2012, 08:42:33 pm »

What are some symptoms of save game corruption? I've got some pretty freaky things happening like migrants refusing to go into my fortress (it has wagon access), items not appearing that I can trade (no instruments even though I have a few hundred, or any type of stone stuff) and dwarves generally refuse to leave my fort (there is nothing blocking the path, made sure of it and wagons can enter)

oh yeah, and the game takes a bit to save, longer than usual. I had a pretty good fort running too, which is a shame. I'm using the 34.02 release

The first symptom of save game corruption is usually the game crashing when you load.  Sometimes it shows up when the game randomly crashes for no reason.

Your symptoms are probably not save game corruption.  I suspect that all three of your problems are due to a locked door, broken ramp or stairs, burrow, or something else blocking pathing.  Although the instruments not showing up might be due to an export restriction - either the instruments, or something else they've been shoved in a bin with.

Seconded on the crashing.

Sometimes save corruption happens because of crashing.  Deliberate save-scumming can cause it too, and the game code doesn't know the difference between crashing and save-scumming. I lost a few forts that way.

Doesn't savescum.

Anyways, I'll throw in a third, Usually you'll get save corruption on crashing, especially if you crash on load/save. If that hasn't happened, Chances are rather small. And it's probably an in game problem like suggested two steps above.

I remember in 34.01 in a corrupted savegame migrants and traders would hang around the map border for a while before they moved on. Also, it crashed for me when enemies were about to show up. A sure way to tell that your savegame is corrupted is that the number of files in the savegame folder will shrink over time.

Migrants will sometimes not come to your fortress properly if you don't have a meeting hall designated.
