But they can lie to the player that they have children, just like they lie about their real name.

I've had to deal with vampires quite a bit recently. I found 3 way to tell them apart... for now... (Toady has reworked the vampires)

A) Give the a nickname; Vampires won't display them
B) Give them a Custom Job Title; same as above
C) 4+ Former members of a civ, and probably ex-(leadertype) of a religion

How to deal with them:

My favorite is to use cages for justice then deconstruct the cage with the dwarf, build the cage into a danger room and hook it up to a lever. Release dwarf. It took 10 hits with Candy spike (masterwork; 10 spears) traps.

Lock every dwarf in their room. As soon as they get hungry or thirsty, you can let them go. Those that don't, are vampires. Much easier than making a drowning test chamber.
