Awesome! Auto accidents are still one of the largest causes of death in the US. Hopefully that'll be a thing of the past, soon.

Well yeah, but they can be regulated like people who still like to hunt for their food: Do it in a place where other people won't get hurt.


It's not like long, empty, country dirt roads are going away anytime soon (at least in the US).

Autonomous vehicles can still be driven by people, it's just optional. Presumably you could retake control if you get into the countryside.

quite a lot of people naturally dislike automatic cars because, psychologically, we like being in control. I can imagine it reducing the numbers, but I feel there will still be some people driving cars themselves.
The best way that I have seen the idea of automatic cars implemented was in the Cassandra Kresnov novels. Basically your car works on a semi-autopilot. So you are still able to control the speed and a small amount of placement in the vehicle (thus allowing you to better avoid small obstacles), but the overall computer system sets limits like a maximum/minimum speed and if it senses that you are about to crash into something (or something is about to crash into you!) it will override the various vehicles to attempt to prevent accidents (such as stomping on the brakes in one vehicle and potentially accelerating in the other to get it out of the road).

That way people have the safety benefits from having a computer in control (accident avoidances), the advantages from having a person in control (obstacle avoidance) and people still get to feel like they are in control of where they are going (psychological benefits).

I'd take slightly bored over the excitement that happens when the guy swerves lanes and sideswipes the side of your car, sending you into the middle of an intersection. :P
