Keeping an artifact locked away
« on: February 22, 2012, 08:49:17 pm »

Is there some way to take an artifact that my dwarves made and keep it someplace safe in the fortress so that it'll be available to my adventurer without having to search through a ransacked fort?

Well, you can make a stockpile that only accepts items of Artifact quality, lock the door of the room it is in and hope it doesn't get scattered.  I think folks have had success using lead bins to minimize how far things get moved, but don't know for sure how well that works.

Forbid it as soon as the moody dwarf finishes so it never gets moved out of the workshop. Or, if possible, build it as an Upright Weapon (which can be picked up in adventure mode). Objects inside structures stay where they are.

Forbid it as soon as the moody dwarf finishes so it never gets moved out of the workshop. Or, if possible, build it as an Upright Weapon (which can be picked up in adventure mode). Objects inside structures stay where they are.

You can't build upright weapons, only place them in weapon traps :/

Artifacts not placed in buildings are destroyed when your fortress falls, and artifacts are bugged when adventurers try picking them up. You can pick them up an infinite amount of times, but once dropped, never again.

You can, but only spears and spikes; which can also be picked up like Upright Adamantine Swords.

I haven't actually tested this theory, but I think artifacts inside bins might be safe. Just hard as fuck to find.

Build lots of lead bins, make a 1*1 stockpile that only accepts artifcats, get it put into the lead bin on that stockpile and then seal it. It should be there when you return.

The most reliable way is to build your fortress on a night creature lair and put it in there.

Lead bins work, but if I remember correctly, multiple visits to the same fort in adventure mode causes items to be dumped out on the square the bin is on and then it scatters to the wind the next time you visit. Not sure if this bug was fixed or not.

I can confirm stuff in workshops never scatter.

There might be some other method, where you build the weapon into a trap on a floor, then have an adventurer collapse a floor tileor something on top with a lever, it should deconstruct the trap and liberate the weapon.

There's a mod for a display case that I love using. (Props to whoever came up with it.)

[BUILDING_WORKSHOP:DISPLAY_CASE]
   [NAME:Display Case]
   [NAME_COLOR:7:0:1]
   [DIM:1:1]
   [WORK_LOCATION:1:1]
   [BUILD_LABOR:MASON]
   [BUILD_KEY:CUSTOM_SHIFT_Y]
   [BLOCK:1:0]
   [TILE:0:1:'#']
   [COLOR:0:1:0:7:0]
   [TILE:1:1:'#']
   [COLOR:1:1:0:7:0]
   [TILE:2:1:'#']
   [COLOR:2:1:0:7:0]
   [TILE:3:1:8]
   [COLOR:3:1:6:2:0]
   [BUILD_ITEM:1:BLOCKS:NONE:NONE:NONE][CAN_USE_ARTIFACT]
   [BUILD_ITEM:1:NONE:NONE:NONE:NONE][CAN_USE_ARTIFACT]

Essentially it's an object mounted to a large block of whatever. Don't quite know how it'll go in adventurer. Are you capable of dismantling buildings?

Nope. You can retrive items stored in a building, like workshop clutter, but not items constructed into a building.

There might be some method of deconstructing it with a lever, like a cage, or dropping a ceiling on it.

I'd imagine it works like Upright Weapons, so if that's the case, then yes. Never actually used it before, though.

The Upright Fun Stick is a special building that an adventurer can dismantle.  All other buildings are workshops, and workshops cannot be dismantled by an adventurer.

If you're smart with military, you can actually get your stuff put away neatly!

1: Build a barracks and place a weapon rack and armor stand in it.
2: Make a squad of one dwarf, it doesn't matter who.
3: Assign that dwarf equipment individually, using the "Individual Weapon" option, find the artifact on the list - it'll be named so if you remember the name from the artifact list "l" (lower L) then you can find it quickly.
3: Assign this squad to "wear civilian clothes while off duty."
4: Give an order, wait, and cancel it.

This will cause the dwarf to go pick up his equipment - the artifact(s) - wear and/or wield, and then go put them away on the weapon rack and armor stand in the barracks.  The only issue, is that these items are now free, and any dwarf will haul them to the armor and weapon stockpiles.  Once they're placed on the rack, forbid the artifacts to make sure no one hauls them to the stockpiles.

The artifacts are now held on the building, much like items are held in the workshop, these are "inside" the weapon rack and will not be disturbed on abandon.  To retrieve them, simply walk onto the weapon rack and pick them up.

This also works with all other equipment and also clothing.  Anything that a dwarf can wear, can become a uniform.  Any uniform can be placed onto an armor stand.  Anything on an armor stand will remain stationary on abandon and can be picked up by an adventurer.

Was it accidental that haulers will move stuff off the racks?

Seems counterproductive.

You can dismantle upright spears and spikes too. I know this because I tested it recently while playing around with DFmode. I took control of Crewtowns' captain of the guard and dismantled the entire torture chamber. You can only pick up one weapon before all the spikes and spears in the building deconstruct. :P

Levers still work though, so you could aways have a collapsing floor lever to release items.
