Also, what the flux am I supposed to do with a High Master Wax Worker? How could any self-respecting dwarf even get to that point, anyway?
"Urist, come tend the garden!"
"Can't. Gotta mold this wax."
"Urist, it's your turn to butcher the livestock!"
"Can't. Gotta dip this wax."you
"Urist, are you ever going to build that additional bedroom you were always talking about?"
"Not now, honey, I've gotta carve this wax."
"Urist, we're under attack by goblins! Curse them!"
"Ooohh, hang on, I feel a FUNNY MOOD COMING ON!!!!"

Well when you manage to make a prophetic self referencing fractal effigy made out of nothing but wax and spikes of stone, you become really known for it ;P

But my ire is actually more directed at the doctors, who despite having an awesome hospital filled with supplies don't seem to care enough for their fellow wounded. Everything's done at a sluggish rate, patients get cleaned waaay too late when every single wound is infected and can't be helped anymore.
I enable all medical skills on absolutely everyone (I don't mind any dwarf taking time out to patch up another). They might not be as fast individually as a highly-skilled dwarf, but somebody's going to pick up the job immediately and that saves a lot of time. I mod to keep medical skills from rusting and put a point into Diagnostician with the dedicated miner so the Health screen is immediately enabled. If you aren't modding skill rust then you need more starting levels to slow the skill loss.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

If you are lucky enough to get dwarfs with rotting feet, then you can train your diagnostician/surgeon up very quickly. They will keep removing the rotting tissue, then more tissue rots, and the cycle continues for a couple of years until the dwarf eventually dies.

Also make sure your doctor enjoys helping people. :)

That was a great read indeed! Soapmakers have always been underrated. But my ire is actually more directed at the doctors, who despite having an awesome hospital filled with supplies don't seem to care enough for their fellow wounded. Everything's done at a sluggish rate, patients get cleaned waaay too late when every single wound is infected and can't be helped anymore.

I think this is fixed. I got an early injury in a 34.01 game and quickly set up an impromptu hospital and assigned doctoring skills to all my dorfs, and they went MAD crazy rushing to help., forsaking all other jobs. Might have been a fluke, but remembering how awful it was to get a totally unemployed doctor to do anything but sit around with NO JOB in previous versions, I think it's been fixed.

I really hope it's fixed. I burrowed my doctors to the hospital in order to minimize their laziness, but they just watched the patient slowly die without moving a finger. When the poor fella died, the asshole doctor would be the first to claim their clothes. That just made me want to punch him. >:(

But if that's fixed, cheers for Toady!

I had a last-dwarves-in-the-world fortress in 40d or so where I trained a legendary soap maker.  Most of it went into building an inverted soap pyramid.  It got to about 6-7 z high before the weather improved and I could go skiing (at which point I put the game away).
