I just import lye.
I always saw the value in soap, but could never seem to keep enough of it around (Blood/vomit soaked dwarves using it to clean themselves rather than the wounded. cheap bastards.)

Build cabinets and coffers in your hospital, your doctor Dorfs will then proceed to stockpile reserved ammunition hospital expendables. Also, build a soap reserve out of soap floors/walls :D

Soap doesn't have a quality modifier so when I want soap I find someone sitting on their hands and they become the soap maker. Relatively small amounts of soap can sustain a sprawling fortress so having a dedicated soap maker seems pointless.

The main purpose for soap in my fort is to use up rock nuts before I hit the  200 nut limit.

You'd think in a fort making tons of kids that that limit would be exceeded more than just once.

Sorry, I had to do it. I just couldn't resist.

In .31 at least, imported lye was only good for one bar because the ten units were in one stack and the soapmaker's workshop used a stack at a time. Four or five bars a year will supply a hospital, but by the time you start getting it (it's not something they commonly bring in the first year) you've probably found the time to make some even if you haven't needed it yet.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

High Master Small Animal Dissectors, though...

Considering how useless the skill is. I consider those guys to just be .... sadistic deviants.

Animal carers are worse.

If they could actually treat the poor attack dogs who got injured that'd be great.

Agreed. Soap is seriously under-valued by dwarf fortress noobs, who as a group seem obsessed with piddling stone crafts. Let's see you disinfect that pus-oozing wound with your *gabbro mug*!!!

=DROPS A THOUSAND GABRO MUGS ON MAYOR=

On a related note, someone should physically enter Toady's apartment and ask him nicely if he an make caravans bring soap.

What does the animal caretaker skill actually get used for? Dragging animals to pastures?

No they're supposed to tend to the animals. Wrap their wounds, perform surgery and such ...

... but they never do. They just claim to be an animal caretaker and then waltz around doing fuckall while the pets die.

It's a bug that makes them probably one of the most useless dwarves ever. How they were able to reach great animal caretaker is beyond me.
