Artifact platinum shield.
« on: February 22, 2012, 02:20:45 pm »

As i heard heavier metals are better for shield bashing, just how good would an artifact platinum shield be?

Is there a thing as TOO heavy?

If you play dwarf fortress long enough, you realise you can NOT have TOO MUCH.
On the serious side, it has the same weight as a normal platinum shield, the attacks just get a 120x bonus (if im correct).

It'd weigh a lot, which might not make a difference if the user is properly mighty.

Dwarves shield bash mostly when their main weapon gets stuck. If you use speardwarves, you'll see lots of shield bashing. A hammerdwarf, not so much, better off with a wooden shield.

Also, I'm not sure if shields receive damage bonuses.

They might receive block bonuses. Either way, it seems like a great shield :D.

Artifact weapons get a 3x attack bonus, not a 120x.  I'm sure that a shield used as a weapon would get that bonus as well.

And as platinum is the heaviest metal in the game, I'm sure this thing'll be beautiful in melee.  Give it to a guy using only a shield, no weapons.  >:)

Ah well, the 120x would be value then :P

It's a 120x value over base grade.  Weapons get a 3x to-hit value, making them more accurate, and armor gets a 2x to-block value, making them more likely to intercept a blow.  Since shield material doesn't matter for protection, a wooden and steel shield will block just the same, your platinum shield gets a bonus if your dwarf ever decides to bash someone with it, as well as the extra blocking chance.

Although in all seriousness, all you're getting is +5 Bling Score and not much else.  Axes are going to do damage before you shield bash, so it's not really going to do much more literal good against enemies.

That said, HFS ahoy and see what happens!

A while ago, someone on this forum had a platinum war hammer, with predictable results.

Hint - a dead fortress, 3 dead forgotten beasts, about 30 dead goblins, 10 dead humans and 9 dead elves. And one living elf.

I have a soldier whose main weapon is an artifact iron buckler, and dare I say he kicks a surprising amount of ass. So I say give it to a dwarf as their only weapon(unless you want them to duel wield shields, which, from what I've observed, works pretty well, too), and watch them beat the living shit out of every enemy they come across.

Nothing like a shield with a kill list.

Even better when in adventure mode killing people by throwing the shield Captain America style.

While we're still on the subject of shields; am I right in assuming bucklers are less likely to block than shields, but also make better weapons due to their smaller contact area?

I'd say yes and historically that was half the point of a buckler, using it like brass knuckles.
