Population manipulation is limited by your influence, influence can be used to do stuff that effects population indirectly.

Example: You could give a speech which raises their morale, this could affect how much work they get down that turn, making them happy so you get an extra influence point next turn, make them fight better, how readily the reproduce (or not readily if your population is growing to large), getting buildings done faster.  Also later when you get currency you can use that in place of influence.

You can use it to find a spouse, so you can have heirs (which other players can take over when they turn 16)

etc.

Also, is using myself as a point of population something I can do in addition to or instead of using my influence?

You can use your self as a point of population yes.

Ahhhh, neat.

Also, is using myself as a point of population something I can do in addition to or instead of using my influence?

You can use your self as a point of population yes.
I knew that, but does it require influence to do so?

Like, assume there were plenty of spare people lying around. Could I use my 2 Influence to convince two of them to work the mines, then also jump in and work the mines myself for three people total, or does using myself like that interfere with my Influence?

Anyway, editing action heavily. This just got better!

You count as a full population (roughly 25 people) because you're a hero!  You don't need to influence yourself to do work.

Oh and trying to domesticate something takes influence regardless of who does it.  Also depending on the beast it could take a while.

Ok, so the actions I'd like to perform:

1. Gather the miracle fern. This should not cost influence, if I'm understanding it correctly?
2. Encourage the people to work harder for the betterment of themselves and others.
3. Encourage the people to try to capture and tame some of the Fae Death, for their...milk, I guess.

Not using the third influence right now because I can't think of anything.

Is there any advantage for Akethoria to pursue total control of the sea? Also, can influence be used to create a religion?

1. Yep you can do that.
2. You should be more specific about the outcome your hoping for.
3. Let me explain why this is a terrible terrible idea (also you can't do it do to population restrictions) they are the size of mice, so the milk you'll get from one is minuscule in order to get enough for a single unit of milk you'd need like 1000 of them, also they have claws that when they cut you, you die within minutes, like foam at the mouth eyes bleeding death, their milk isn't worth it.

Is there any advantage for Akethoria to pursue total control of the sea? Also, can influence be used to create a religion?

You mean besides having total control of the ocean?

Yes, religion is a great way to have influence, also building a church rewards a hero slot (for preacher/prophets/popes/etc, but hey)

Simply being the leader of a church gives you influence over anyone (even other nations populations) who worship it.

To start a religion you need to build a temple which is like 3 wood (or stone) Churches provide happiness to the population so it's worth building foreign churches even if you don't control the religion.

If your a ruler you can also be the ruler of a religion, but hero's can do the same too.

Nice touch with the religion system, but, regarding the control of the ocean... Are there any solid benefits to monopolizing it? After all, I probably cannot place a camp amidst the ocean, or am I mistaken?

You mean besides monopolizing the ocean?  Also all land is rolled like this, I roll a 1d4 if I roll a 1-3 the hex is the same as one of the adjacent pieces (which I assign rolls to if I have too) if I roll a 4 I roll a new place, new ecology, new plants, animals, geographical features.  I'm not hiding the map, the map doesn't exist.  Your current ocean could literally only be those 3 hexs big.  It's all in the dice.

Ok.
Going with 1. still
Scratch 3. I just won't use much influence this turn I guess.
As for 2..
Reword it too:
2. Encourage the people to work harder for the betterment of themselves and others, and so cut more wood and do so in a fashion that produces better quality lumber.

The quality is affected by what it is, not how you cut it.  I can do more though, +1 harvest rate per influence used in speech.

I'm still not clear on the influence system.  I have a pop of two, and two influence.  Can I take more than two actions?
