Overstonage
« on: November 08, 2007, 03:04:00 pm »

Ho!
I just dug out a nice row cave for all the dwarfs that are running into my fortress. unfortunately around 90% of all the panels i dug out formed a stone.
guess what i already have around 300 stones or so stored and i surely do not want around 15 dwarfs run around my fortress just to store stone in just another room...

Is there any way to get rid of stones rather quickly?

Also: do dwarfs care about the size of a designated room or are they fine with a 3 panel appartment with a bed a chair and a table jammed into one row?

300 stones? My bookkeeper already counts around 2000...

I just try to make them into crafts as quickly as possible.

man... where do you store those?
is it possible to make stone bins?
that would reduce the sontes and on the other hand give dem dwarfs bins to store 5 in one spot right?

Some (not terribly quick) ways to use up stone are to make tons of stone crafts, or to build a tower complex above ground level out of stone walls. Another way is to make lots of stone blocks to build roads out of.

Or build a few catapults and train siege operators. It takes a long time and a lot of stone to train a no-skills peasant up to Legendary siege op.

"Ordinary" dwarfs (bookkeeper, manager and nobles excepted) don't need tables or chairs in their rooms. But in addition to their bed, they'll want a chest and a coffer when(if) the coin economy starts up, so a 1x3 room is about the smallest you want to make. Then there is also the issue of room value which affects the "rent". If you make basic rooms too fancy with smoothed floors or high-quality furniture, unskilled dwarfs with menial jobs won't be able to afford them.

When he claims a workshop, he'll go find what he needs. If it's not available he'll just sit there. Then the q command display will give some clues of what he's looking for, though it can be cryptic sometimes.

Well.. it is a GEM setter so i think a jeweler workshop might be right.

he hangs out around the meeting room.

i build the jeweler workshop and he doesn't move an inch.

Oh, and yes, the rent for rooms starts up when you've made enough coins to start up the economy. Then you have to make sure you've got paying jobs for all your dwarfs too.

Thats a known bug in the new version. The workshop has to be built before the workshop - if its built afterwards, the dwarf wont claim it.

One workaround is to build the workshop directly on top of the crazy dwarf, he should claim it that way.

Am I the only one who just dumps the excess stones?

I dump them if I need them cleared out (generally for stockpiles and the extremely annoying ones that flash on my stairs), otherwise I just let them sit there.
