Safe Windmilling?
« on: February 22, 2012, 01:38:46 am »

Since I embarked on a biome without aquifer, brook, river, or any sort of flow (and I don't want to build a fusion reactor if I can help it), I've been forced to build windmills to supply power.

Now I don't need much power, just nine windmills worth.

On previous maps, I seem to remember being able to create perfectly sealed wind farms (constructed in such a way that fliers, building destructors, and flying building destructors could not get in).

But for whatever reason when I tried sealing in the top of my wind farm, the windmills stopped working. This seems like an obvious feature now, but it leaves me with a question:

How do I keep nine windmills powered while making sure that they are air tight, or at least are safe from even flying building destroying titans?

I've already tried placing floor grates over the windmills, it seems the grates don't let in enough windflow to cause windmilling to happen.

Worst case scenario I'll build a few fusion reactors, but since I only needed 50 some power, it seemed silly to build a whole reactor, I'm only pumping magma up like 6 stories.

You could use bridges. Keep them open when it's safe and once the flying BD comes around, close them. If windmills really require open space, then this will cause them to lose power when bridges are closed, but at least they will be safe.

I really like that idea. Plus it doubles as a way to shut off the magma stack without deconstructing it, which could be really useful for repairs and the like.

You could try putting the windmill on the top level of the map.  I don't think they could fly over walls there.

I've not tested this, but it seems quite likely that fortifications will allow wind to pass through them.

Do they, I seem to recall that fortications only let living things pass when they're pushed through.

It allows fliers if there is no roof above said fortifications, according to the wiki.

eg: buid wall, then carve fortifications

Can't carve out of constructed wall. However, flying destroyers are rare enough for it to not matter that it's left exposed to the sky.

Fortifications can be built one of two ways. Firstly, they can be carved from [[construction|constructed]] walls or [[smoothing|smooth]]ed natural walls by pressing {{K|d}}esignation and then C{{K|a}}rve Fortifications.

From wiki.

Best idea so far.

You could otherwise remove all flying titans/forgotten beasts from the world.sav file.

On the subject of windmills, how do you know where to put one for best, or any, wind speed. I built one, it did not wind mill. I said screw em.

Your map either has normal air flow (40 power), low air flow (20 power), or it doesn't have air flow at all. Windmill location is irrelevant.

Is there a way to find out what your map has, other than building one?
