Stalling is a legitimate tactic. Anyway, we're onto week 14.

I don't disagree. But when you lack the muscle to stop a box it's just depressing and frustrating and unfun to watch a bunch of humans stroll down the pitch and then have a tea party.

Also: w00t w00t? Well, fun season guys. I'm going to hold my five wins and cry.

There's almost never such a thing as an unstoppable box. For you, getting lucky doubles on a Skink and buying him Guard would help. Box-breaking can often be a fun puzzle in a game of Blood Bowl. A lot of people, when building their box, don't take into account that once they run out of empty squares around a blocked player, you start having options about who gets pushed where. So, in the most obvious example:

XXX
XOX
XXX

The ball carrier in the middle will get squirted to an edge so long as you get at least a push on *any* wall player.

On the subject of cages: If you want to learn more about them, and win a bit more often, check out caging and cage breaking as well. As ndkid notes, using more than the 4 players + ball carrier in your cage both weakens your position around the field, and makes it easier to push your ball carrier into a more vulnerable position. Of course, it can't always be avoided, but it's undesirable.

As for stalling, you're right that it's really frustrating.
Edit: Forgot to mention, one thing I do when my opponent is stalling is gang foul. He usually has some players left behind you can stand around and kick in the balls. It's a decent way to encourage him to score.

Monk's Marauders vs Manner Pylon

For I think just the second time this season, the Marauders have a higher TV than their opponent- significantly so, even. Jartol buys potions with his inducement money, one of them giving +STR to a Stormvermin.

The Marauders win the toss, and elect to receive. Eomund Tonkai takes the field as Thrower instead of Helmut, hoping to gain his first level and provide credible depth at the position. For similar reasons, the lower level Catcher is the only one on the pitch- the Marauder plan is simply to cage down the field and try to hurt some Skaven on the way to make for an easy second half.

Like most Marauder plans, this one doesn't last much beyond the first couple of turns. The Marauder push stalls short of the line of scrimmage on the left side as Skaven send the humans flying like bowling pins, putting Eomund in an increasingly awkward position. In the process, Manfred the Bawler, a skilled Human lineman who became known for intercepting the Earth Strikers and generally wrestling things too big for him, found himself on the wrong end of the Rat Ogre's fist- the apothecary was unable to save his life, and he was carted off the pitch in a coffin. The Catcher was also KO'd, and many Marauders were slow to get up due to the stunning force of their takedown.

The Marauders responded by finally making some headway on the Skaven flank, sneaking out a pair of Blitzers and Eomund himself who completed a short pass to a Blitzer to assure his next level. Unfortunately, Gutter Runners dodged and twisted their way to the Blitzer and knocked him down, before recovering the ball. The Marauders were unable to get to the ball-carrier on the next turn, and not unexpectedly a series of clever blocks, dodges, and passes got a Gutter Runner well out of range of any Marauder and within sight of the end zone. Frustrated, the Marauders can only fracture a Skaven's leg and generally throw pointless punches before the Runner scores at the close of the half.

Halftime: Monk's Marauders 1 - 0 Manner Pylon.

Before kicking off, the Marauders elect to keep both Catchers on the field to try and keep up with the speedy Skaven (who are themselves undermanned.) The Marauder front holds up reasonably well, and after a few turns of back and forth shoving a narrow opening is created for the ballcarrier. Unfortunately, a Gutter Runner fails a dodge before the Marauders can be fully marked up, and Grant Valdred, the only Blitzer with Tackle has a clear line to the ballcarrier. He capitalizes on his opportunity, sending the Gutter Runner to the turf and allowing Helmut the Thrower to pick up the ball. A little violence and a short pass later gets a Catcher downfield with a small escort. The rats fight hard, keeping the pressure up all the way back down the field, but it isn't enough as a handoff before the final quarter of the game gets the other Catcher into the endzone.

Turn 13: Monk's Marauders 1 - 1 Manner Pylon

At this point, the Skaven only have 9 men on the field. They make a good showing of themselves, crumbling the Marauder center like wet cardboard and getting a sizable cage into Marauder territory, but some tricky maneuvering gets 5 Marauder tackle zones on the ballcarrier. Jartol's rerolls and luck both run out as they fail to shift the Humans, and Dagg gets the rat on the ground while a Catcher takes off downfield.

On the last play, the game really should have ended with Dagg falling over on a Both Down while trying to open a path to the ball, but due to a bug Jartol had no choice but watch his Wrestler use his skill, preventing a turnover. Helmut got around the pile, succeeded a GFI, and slung the ball to the waiting Catcher. Wonder of wonders, the Catcher handled the ball fine, and waltzed into the end zone as time expired.

Final Score: Monk's Marauders 2 - 1 Manner Pylon

That was a good win for me- a bit of a confidence booster heading into the playoffs. The death of my Manfred the Bawler, Wrestler Lineman, is regrettable- I quite liked him. It certainly could have been much worse, though- Dagg certainly hit the ground a lot this game, and it would have been awful if he was injured going into the playoffs. The only level up was Eomund Tonkai- I had intended to develop him as more of a defensive player to back up the already Accurate Helmut, but Eomund scored +AGI on his first level. Eomund also nabbed MVP, which should accelerate him nicely to his next level and Block. He'll outshine Helmut at that point- until then, though, I trust the veteran more.

That's the issue. With three sauruses on-field, and only two that can break tackle, I was kinda limited with what to do. It was a struggle with all the guard around to actually get a one-dice block, let alone two. At least with some more S4 in the fray I could at least stand a chance to get one dice. I mean, goc knows I had the ball-carrier on he ropes through chain-shoves a few times. Oh, well.

S2 players just... can't break a cage. Full stop.

Addendum: Unless it's a cage of snotlings.

I feel ya Charmander.

The only thing I could do last game was dodge away from the box, no way in hell could I break it, with ST 4 guys on all corners.

My only chance is to hope that someone drops the ball, and then I spring into action, but barring any fumbles, I simply cannot break a cage.

Mind you, I have a really agile Wood elf team, no ST increase, no guards(except for Beechbranch), but like 5 Agi increases, and 6 extra move, and dodge on almost all players.

I'm also fairly sure I need doubles to get guard on a skink, and there are much more important skills to take first. Like anything involving handling the ball.

Still not looking forward to the last match.

Burnt Pies and I played to a 1-1 draw today.

This locks up the top three positions, so I'll see you in the semifinals Monk!

Kobb's Khorne vs. Earth Strikers

One of the Warriors gets slowed, the team gets bad habits, and the dwarves bring some cheering fans and a wizard. Khorne elects to kick, and lines up in FFB.

E1: A blitz by Khorne leads speedy, with a lead blitzer, to get under the ball. It bouces off him, off the body of a downed dwarf, and between Speedy and his lead blitzer. The dwarves knock over the minotaur before having a troll slayer stun himself on the block.

K1: The dwarven wizard's fireball knocks over Speedy and his lead blitzer. TAB blitzes through to pick up the ball. Several dwarves get knocked over.

E2: A blitzing dwarf knocks over TAB. The ball goes out, and the fans throw it back to the middle of the Dwarven backfield, where a blitzer picks it up. A dwarf knocks himself over blocking a beastman.

K2: A beastman knocks over the blitzer, picks up the ball, and runs it in.

E3: A runner picks up the kickoff and moves forward with a wall forming around him. A dwarf knocks over the minotaur, but another one falls over trying to block a beastman.

K3: A warrior smashes a dwarf's hand. The front line of the dwarves collapses, and most of the Khorne team collapses in front of the ball carrier.

E4: TAB gets stunned.

K4: The minotaur continues to stay down. The ball carrier gets knocked over. Most of the dwarves go down, and a young beastman picks up the ball and runs it toward the goal line.

E5: A troll slayer gets knocked over trying to dodge.

K5: The beastman runs the ball in.

E6: The runner muffs picking up the ball.

K6: Khorne surges over the front line, getting a beastman beside the ball, and most of the team behind him.

E7: A runner scurries away with the ball. A troll slayer stands up and knocks over TAB. Another troll slayer knocks himself over making a block.

K7: The dwarves at centerfield get knocked over, but the attempted blitz at the Runner's blockers goes wrong.

E8: Another failed block. (Lots of 2-skull blocks)

K8: An attempt as scoring leads to a warrior falling over while running.

Halftime Score: Kobb's Khorne 2 - 0 Earth Strikers

K9: Khorne gets an extra reroll on the kickoff. TAB goes back to receive. The minotaur knocks himself over blocking.

E9: Some pushes. A couple of dwarves run toward the ball.

K10: TAB picks up the ball and lobs it toward New Guy, but it lands behind the Khorne line.

E10: Many Khorne players go down, but the ball remains behind beastmen.

K11: Khorne makes a hole, and New Guy picks up the ball and runs through it.

E11: Three dwarves line up with New Guy against the sideline. A dwarf finishes TAB's day with no further ill-effect. A troll slayer fouls the minotaur to no effect. A dwarf knocks himself over blocking a warrior.

K12: An attempt to get New Guy space fails.

E12: New Guy gets knocked out... the ball is returned to the middle of the Earth Striker pitch. But a runner fails to pick up the ball.

K13: A warrior picks up the ball and dodges away, but falls over trying to run fast.

E13: The runner tosses the ball over a beastman to a dwarf in the Khorne backfield.

K14: Khorne can't get to the ball carrier, and so focuses on knocking over dwarves.

E14: The dwarf on the sideline pushes forward to get out of danger.

K15: A series of blocks knocks one dwarf down into another, who goes off the pitch.

E15: Not much

K16: A foul injures a dwarf, and another one gets pushed off the pitch.

E16: The dwarf runs in the ball.

Final Score: Kobb's Khorne 2 - 1 Earth Strikers

Thoughts: This matchup played to my strengths. I wasn't going to injure a dwarf, but they weren't going to be able to punch through my line as easily as they can most teams... 5 different players with S4+, plus a smattering of guard, is more than a couple of troll slayers can take out.

Now I wait for the match that decides whether I'm into the post-season or not.

That was the match that decided if you were in the post season or not. You have a tiebreak edge over both Burnt Pies and Charmander.

Last game remaining this week is ank vs Charmander -- how's it going, guys?

Oh! Burnt Pies had already played, *and* I only needed her to draw? SUCCESS!!

I am totally limping into the playoffs this year, and, given what you said, I take it my match is going to be against ank, which practically means I have a catcher I need to get off the pitch if I'm going to have any chance at all. I hope I got some skill ups I can spend on tackle from this last match...

"And here we are in the last match of the season - more of a formality at this point, given how the wood elves are sitting comfortably at the top of the league, and the lizardmen have been ousted out of the playoffs with the Chaos side snatching position after winning over the dwarfish Marauders. Isn't that right, Bob?"

"Yeah, that's right. That doesn't mean the Stormers will be fighting any less than they normally do, though - there's a lot of rage from last week's game against the human side, from what I hear!"

"And with a full compliment of muscle, they'll be looking to make some elves hurt! Now, on with the match!"

The Stormers, despite being second in the league for Team Value, still have a hefty 330k to spend. That buys a Master Chef and sends the ref's judgemental eyes on Thandrin, who comes up clean. Which is odd, considering all the hairgel - that must constitute some form of performance enhancer. Nonetheless, it's a late evening match, and the Stormers elect to receive after winning the toss, the sun long and low against the buildings surrounding the stadium.

As the ball goes skywards, a heat wave washes over the stadium, the air turning muggy and uncomfortable for both sides. Initially, the sauruses charge hard - Mejj knocks out an unlucky wardancer, and the sauruses [push forward, looking to lay some hurt - for all the good it does. First injury goes to Beechbranch, who gives a stoic punch to the gut of Rexx and snaps a couple of ribs in the process, putting him out for the rest of the season. Following up that display, the wood elves seem remarkably bolstered - and proceed to wreck the Stormers' push, knocking around the poor blue-skinned side a lot harder than they were perhaps expecting from a bunch of tree-hugging hippies.

The push stunted with a lot of skinks down, the Stormers hold their drive, failing to move forward appreciably, and settling into a more defensive play, unwilling to risk losing the ball the the agile, speedy side. The fury that bolstered the elven beatdown is suddenly surprisingly lacking, only able to actually shove the ball around. However, Howard Allan and Grolirel both head off to shut down the ball-holding Nirr, who... practically starts shitting himself at the prospect of having to face down the pair alone.

Thankfully, a freight train by the way of Jarr the Belugafaced shoves Howard to the ground, and Nirr, despite a shaky launch, hurls the ball  to Tyrr, up-front for the first time in a long, long time. With a quick slip he gets out of range of Iraeffyn and runs in the ball, securing his position as a pro bloodbowl player, despite the concussion received months ago. Sadly, the heat gets the better of Takk, Ravv and Thandrin, each one put out in a sweltering daze for this kickoff while they recover.

Still, the elves take a leaf from Kobb's Khorne, setting up on (mostly) Full Frontal Brutality as Mazz fucks the kick and sends the ball into the stands. Beechbranch decides he really likes his position as a turret, however, and roots midfield. For all that it matters, as Ethilhain runs in the ball in one quick turn, barely giving the skinks time to react. Given the quick drive, Iraeffyn is the only one to go down, his pansy elven constitution giving him heatstroke from five seconds in the sun.

As the ball goes skyward for the third time, the skink side gets a quick snap, pounding forward, but not making huge use of the opportunity, with defence still lingering in the lizard's minds. Ravv fails to catch the kick, but the ball is recovered by the starstruck Tyrr and kept safe in his claws. The elves converge on the skinks, however, pushing forward hard and shutting down any easy touchdowns for the Stormers. In the ensuing melee, Jarr puts out rookie Lolowin, and the opening lets Tyrr hand off to Ravv, who, in homage to the one-turner Ethilhain, sprints for the endzone... and falls flat on his face just short.

The elves respond by laying out the majority of the opposition, as Thandrin collects and hurls the ball safely to Berethorvir to pass on. With most of the skinks down, he only lizard that can get close to the ball-carrying Berethorvir is Tyrr, and he can't take down the human-sized critter alone. Not even close. With the support of a charging Jarr, he can also do little - the resulting blits is little more than a shove for the ball-carrier. Scrambling to restore the defence, the skinks fall back, slipping away from barious elves to try and defend. However, Tyrr goes down and out, his concussion getting the better of him as a wardancer axe-kicks him in the snout and leaves him down and hurting. Sorr similarly goes down from a punch from Aethyrd, leaving the skinks hurting for players with still a half to play. With Jarr down way back, Ravv is the sole skink covering the ball-carrier, as the rest of the blue-skinned side pressures the elves - but they only need one opening to make good on a score, and they know it.

Fletcher clears Ravv out of the way easily, leaving Berethorvir to prance as he wont, as the trio of Halhuir, Glorirel and Ciryth cover the thoroughly undefended right side - and, of course, Berethorvir makes the long-bomb into the dextrous hands of Ciryth, who gets smashed to the ground by Mejj's furious charge. Despite that, Novv is unable to make good on the recovery, brought down by the diving elf known as "Please Don't Kill Me", as either Halhuir or Glorilel runs in the ball. All the elves look identical to me. I don't know.

Glorilel and Nirr are taken out by the heatwave, and combined with Garr's stubborn refusal to come around, leaves the skink side down to nine, while the elves maintain their numbers superiority with a compliment of ten. Or nine and a tree. Mazz once more kicks the ball sideways off-field, and once more Ethilhain has an easy run to the endzone. Iraeffyn and Thandrin form a guard of honout, alongside Halhuir and Ciryth, as the elf easily runs the ball in without even a worry.

Garr still remains unconscious, but the elves are bolstered by the fact their unconscious players wake up, while Mazz and Ravv pass out from the temperatures. Down to four skinks and four sauruses, and being two touhdowns down, the skink chances are more or less over at this point. The kick goes high, and Tezz scrambles to stand under it, but that's all he manages as the ball lands flat on his snout and bounces on the astrogranite. Despite the utter lack of support, they push forward anyway, even as Tezz finds himself under pressure from Aethryd. Nirr joins the ranks of the unconscious, injured and heat-struck with a punch from Halhuir. Tezz slips away in a last-hope charge to score, but fumbles the pass after stumbling, eltting it bounce into the hands of Iraeffyn, who passes to Berethorvir, and then to Glorilel, who runs it in. Easily. Depressingly easily.

Garr and Nirr are still fucking unconscious. Glorilel and Thandrin, however, both pass out from the heat. The fans, unsatisfied that the skinks are losing, take to the field and trample the unexpecting lizards, with only Novv, Takk, Jarr and Mazz even standing as the run off, and all that happens there is Mazz is thoroughly unable to touch the ball, fumbling it. Ethilhain picks up the ball as Mazz gets shoved out of the way. For all his efforts in putting up a meagre defence, Jarr gets a gouged eye fro his troubles, and once a-fucking-gain are two sauruses out for the next match.

Irzz and Ravv move to defend, but achieve jack fucking shit, Ethilhain running in the ball without issue and setting the score at 5-1.

Of course, all the elves wake up. Garr does too, although Vorr and Tezz pass out from heatstroke. As does Ciryth, but the elves could just sit in a corner dancing and still win at this point. The three skink supporters left in the crowd cheering and waving their rattles is a bolster to the side, for all the good it does - Takk gets a KO on Iraeffyn, but Irzz fumbles a still ball, and gets brought down by Please Don't Kill Me. Glorirel recovers the ball easily and horls back down to Berethorvir, who just mocks the skinks by moving deep into his own half. Mazz and Garr move to defend, for all the good it does, as Ethilhain moves to score. Again.

Nirr doesn't wake up. Ravv passes out. The elves have a full compliment minus the sole injured rookie Linesman. The rattle-wavers cheer futilely. The ball bounces off-field and the ball is handed to Vorr, who stomps up-field with a flank of four of the surviving skinks. Elves converge in a frenzy of bark and assholishness. Nothing happens. The skinks fuck off back to the changing rooms and plan on eating the head coach alive, for all the good it does.

MVPs were Irzz for being unable to hold a ball, and Aethyrd for getting a pair of injuries.

(...I fucking hate this game.)

Thx for the game, Nuffle was truly on my side.

I just took diving tackle last game, and it really paid off, causing multiple turnovers, as unsuspecting skinks ran past.

The lizards showed some hustle from the get go, and ran in a good td, at a point where I thought I had the drive locked down.

It all fell apart with Nuffle having cursed Charmander this game.

Lucky armour rolls from me, and all the random pitch invasions and heat kept me 4 players above for most of the game... it's really hard to loose that.

I have to say that Wood Elves and Lizards have about the same overall strength, but the elves have way more ball-playing ability(yes, innuendo intended).

And what was up with that mightyblow+piling on saurus?
the best result he got was a stunned! vs armour 7 elves!

Also, most scoring game for me ever! i have NEVER made 6 TDs before.
