The match in main league against monk12 was played last Friday, but we experienced some technical difficulties. Anyways, the game started
great right off the bat, with rain making my orcs even less agile than usual. IIRC first half I did some decent bashing, but the rats had the ball and soon scored. Second drive they kicked, putting the ball deep behind my lines, might be even right on my TD line... and received a kick-off blitz. And as I soon learned, rat player with a kick + kick-off blitz = mucho annoyance. Yeah, they run past my lines before I could properly react and scored. The third drive things started to look silly though. The kick was again perfect, almost exact spot as before... and they received a blitz
again. Thankfully, monk12 didn't feel any pity (because I'd detest someone not playing to their max just because they feel bad about it), played perfectly and despite my resistance scored again. At one point, either 1st or 2nd drive (or both?) I picked the ball before the rats. But I was quickly punished by not doing this with my catcher, as "strip ball" skill proved very effective indeed. 3rd drive I've picked it up with my catcher, but seeing he was too close to some other rats, still decided to throw the ball to my blitzer a bit further away. Throwing and catching with orcs during rain (or just about anytime) feels like pure
magic (though in all honesty 3 AG isn't THAT bad compared to some other teams out there). Still, I also learned that despite most of them having just 2 ST, rats CAN be a nuisance if they gang on your lone orcs. I was really learning much this game. However, at the start of 3rd drive I had some problems with my catcher disappearing. Know bug, I was told. While it did hamper my efforts a bit, probably wouldn't make that much of a difference. The forth drive, just the last turn of the first half, he disappeared again. This time, the game messaged me I am "about to start the match with less than 11 players on the field". Confused, I just clicked "ok". And the game promptly crashed. Later we speculated this was probably due to me placing another player on invisible catcher. Seems plausible. Still, while I was getting wrecked, it was quite fun game so that made me sad. THE_SLAYA was cool and invalidated our match though, so me and monk12 agreed on trying again on Monday. And that's when the real match began.
I didn't change anything for that match, one bloodwiser inducement as before. This time I got lucky and got the ball first though. Formed the cage on my left side, bashed the guys on my right, pushed. Monk12 put up quite a resistance though and pushing was hard. I've managed to switch cages though, running my ball carrier from my left to right and then few turns later back again. I've manged to get on-top in the bashing contest and the cage was gradually getting closer to a TD line so things were really looking up for me. At one point I've even managed to knock out the "strip ball" rat. This all came with a cost though, as I burned through my re-rolls before the end of the first half. On last turn, I've found myself in exciting situation - the path to TD was closed by tackle zones, but one one said with two while on my right side only one ratman stood... if I passed the ball from my catcher to my blitzer (or was it +1 MA lineman?) I though I could score easily. It all depended on one black orc blitzing that lone ratman with double yellow dice to open a path. Even a push would suffice. And he succeed, right?
Of course I get a double red without any chance of rerolls at single most important part of the whole match. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
In all honesty though, I COULD move another orc next to that rat, maybe even two, don't remember, and get 3 dice. And on top of that checking again later it seems like my possible ball carrier would need one GFI roll anyways. Ah well.
Second half saw the knocked-out ball stealing rat returning to the pitch and me doing the kicking, sending the ball far enough behind monk12's lines. He decided to push with his runners though, leaving his linerat to pick it up. Which proved a tiny bit troublesome as he failed to do just that. But managed a turn later so nothing of great importance was lost. During next few turns I've found myself in interesting position again. The rats were pushing but it's always the runners that are the most troublesome. I've managed to knock down one, and with some careful positioning I though I could push or with some luck knock down other 3, stalling their advance or even initiating a counter-push. So I've decided to blitz a runner with one of my black orcs, again. Got double defender stumbles. Seeing how with dodge on rat that would result only in a push, got greedy. Re-rolled. Re-rolled two reds. GG.
So yeah, after operation "Smash sum runners" failed dramatically, the ball changed hands and the rats run... stopping just one step short of scoring. So monk12's plans was, 3 or something turns before the match ends, to stall long enough to destroy any chance of me possibly pulling a draw. Seeing how I needed whole 8 turns last half to even come close to that, I've decided to not even take a challenge and stop him. Instead, I've planned on just going on a murder rampage, dealing as much damage to closest rats as possible. Alas,
someone had other plans. In next few turns and blocks I count a total of either 5 or even 7 consecutive pushes from my orc. Zero bashing, nada, zilch, null. Even foul or two I attempted resulted in absolutely nothing, not even a face down. On the other hand, two of my downed guys got hurt by lone ratmen twice in a row. Thankfully, nothing serious. But at that point the amount of bad rolls just went over the threshold I was prepared to swallow so I just quickly ended my last 2 turns, making short of my misery. And thus the final official score was 1 - 0 for Monk's Mountebanks.
