The obvious uses for a vampire
« on: February 21, 2012, 07:11:15 pm »

First, give it a pickaxe and (have it) wall it(self) off from your main population. Then, have it build some furniture and rooms for itself so it stays happy. Now your vampire is ready to

- explore downwards, to reveal the caves and magma without exposing your dwarves to any danger
- build walls in the caves to build the outline of your main fort's cave levels
- have it do whatever you want, like a hermit within your fortress, that never eats, drinks or sleeps

Giving it some armor, and perhaps some danger room training before breaching caves might be a good idea.

I have have mentaly nicknamed my resident vamp the "Beastslayer". He has killed three of the buggers, and I plan on breaching the funhouse to see what a legendary wresler who cannot feel pain do against the clowns.

I'm under the impression that vampires cannot gain stats, so there would be no need to use a danger room if I am not mistaken.

Using them as a blackbox room, you can even put in a dwarftrap style door system so that you can supply them with alcohol/new stuff from time to time while leaving it impervious to invasion. That way you can essentially make your fort invincible.

Bonus points make it a lever room for that black box that way you have dedicated lever dwarves always on tap.

Extra points if there is a lever in there that can destroy the fort with magma/water flood and then drain the fort so the next batch of migrants can come in and continue on.

I did drop him some booze down a hole in the ceiling, but he never touches it.

Did you remember to unforbid it? Vampires still drink booze because the [ALCOHOL_DEPENDENT] tag isn't removed.

Yeah, I did unforbid them , and even have my vampire haul them to his own personal booze stockpile. He just doesn't drink it. He's been trapped for 3 years now, and I have never seen him drink, or have any thoughts like "had a wonderful drink lately"or such.

I like the idea of just walling them into a 1x1 room.  Then when something kills off your whole fort you can just wait for more migrants as the vampire counts as part of your fortress.   :P

I don't think they get thoughts about drink quality, look at him and see what it says about his alcoholism. If he really isn't drinking it should say "he can't even remember the last time he had a drink"
