Getting Marksdwarves to use Archery Range
« on: February 21, 2012, 02:09:21 pm »

My marksdwarves aren't using the archery range. The ranges are set up correctly and each marksdwarf has a crossbow, quiver, and bolts. They're also set to train, and they're doing that for the most part as well. Why won't they use the archery range?

have you set them to train at the archery range and not to train at a barracks anywhere?

They were set to train both at their barracks and the archery range.

Does having them set at a barracks make them ignore the archery range?

Archery training is currently broken in DF2012.

This can be important.  Do you have separate types of bolts specified for training and combat?  The dwarves might grab combat bolts and then realize they can't train with them, but are too stupid to switch.

Otherwise, you say you've got the ranges set up properly, but one thing that I didn't realize for a while and which trips up some people is that you've got to mark each target as being an archery range.  You can't mark just one and include them all in the zone.

Even with that though, I rarely find more than one or two of my dwarves using the range at a time, but they do train sometimes.

Their ammo is properly configured for both combat and training (Bone bolts. I haven't gotten around to making proper combat ammo for them yet.). I set the archery range as their only training area, and now they're not training at all.

More effective too.  If only you had some sponges / giant sponges on your map, you'd be set to go.

yes, setting them to train only at the archery range.  Setting the barracks to training, will allow them to train fighting/wresting/whatnot.  Training at the archery range for that squad should be turned on.  Turn off training at the barraks.  In addition, make sure you shooting direction is setup correctly.  Another tip is to set the # required to train to 1 or 2 less than the total squad size.  Make sure to have enough targets for each squad member you want to train also.

In addition I've heard the archery ranges don't give nearly the expreience points that animals/goblins/etc do.  Therefore it is common to setup target ranges with gobblins/titans/etc where they can't get out but can get shot at by your marksdwarfs.  If you happen by a bronze colossus or other hard to kill enemy, you can have an awesome target for practice.  (make sure to keep them far enough away from the main hallway that they don't scare your non-military dwarfs.

Just tested this last night.  I turned off training in the armor / weapon stands and made sure it was on for each archery target.  My dwarfs switched from wrestling demonstrations to archery.  I saw alteast 4 training at the same time.

And archery ranges are very ineficient compared to sieges.

ahh, well I'm still on the 2011 release. I've got a fortress I need to kill first.  I guess I could tap the caves as there are probably 5-6 FB's running around them.

I give them a year or 2 as Hunters before I draft them into the military, works like a charm. :)
